A time-consuming scoring drive on the Commanches first possession gave them all the points they needed. Their defense did the rest enroute to a 27-0 victory that put Shiner into the Class 2A, Division II state semifinals.
Shiner (11-3) will face the winner of Friday's Grapeland-Bremond game in the state final four.
"We are not satisfied, these kids know what the big picture is," Shiner head coach Daniel Boedeker said. "We got to take it one week at a time and continue to go back to work."
Shiner received the opening kickoff and proceeded to run off 73 yards in 17 plays, a drive that took over eight minutes off the clock. The possession culminated in a 2-yard touchdown run from Carson Schuette to put the Comanches ahead 7-0.
"That was huge having that long drive and just wearing their defense out," Schuette said. "Most people at this level play both sides of the ball so wearing their defense out before they have to come out on offense and just making them tired is everything."
Shiner's Caleb Cowan was part of a solid Shiner rushing attack taking two Eagle defenders along with him for a nice gain at San Antonio's Heroes Stadium Thursday night.
One of those players playing both ways was Schuette, who not only rushed for a touchdown, but also had two interceptions while playing safety. One of those came in the Junction end zone late in the second quarter.
"He's one of our leaders, and he steps up in the biggest occasions," Boedeker said of Schuette. "Turnovers are huge this time of year and he definitely had some big ones tonight."
When the first quarter ended, Shiner led 7-0 and had the ball at the Junction 4-yard line. The Eagles (12-2) possessed the ball for only 1:54 of the first 12 minutes.
Junction entered the game averaging 46.8 points per game. Shiner kept them off the scoreboard.
"I've never seen anything like that," Schuette said of the Shiner defense. "That's a great offense over there and to shut them out means everything to us. We take pride in our defense and we played fantastic tonight."
The Shiner defense allowed just 105 yards from the Junction offense, compared to 391 for the Comanches. The Shiner offense allowed Junction to possess the ball for 14:54, while Shiner had the ball for 33:06.
Shiner players raised their helmets as they advance to the semifinals next week.
"We were working on this plan all week and we've been ready to play," Shiner running back Quincy Jones said. "We came out of the locker room fired up, ready to hit and that's what we did."
Jones ran for a team-high 125 of the Comanches' 337 yards on the ground.
On the first play of the second quarter, Triston Vesely scored on a 4-yard run to make it 14-0.
On the final play of the third quarter, Jarvis Williams returned a punt 50 yards to make it 21-0. Jones then made it 27-0 with 6:17 remaining as Shiner punched its ticket to the semifinals.
"I feel like we're getting better every week," Boedeker said. "We're so young, but this group just keeps coming to work every day If we continue to keep playing games like this, the better they're going to be in the future."
