YORKTOWN – Tyler Palmer was bothered by a hamstring injury early in the season and has been limited to primarily playing linebacker.

But Palmer got a chance to play running back against Yorktown and he made the most of the opportunity.

Palmer rushed for two touchdowns and caught a touchdown pass to help lead the Comanches to a 42-8 win in the District 15-2A, Division I opener for both teams Friday night at Wildcat Stadium.

“It feels great, I’m back to normal,” Palmer said. “It felt wonderful. The offensive line did a great job. They got their blocks, there were big holes to run through and just make a couple of guys miss.”

Palmer rushed 10 times for 62 yards and scored on runs of 10 and 3 yards in the first half.

He didn’t carry the ball in the second half, but caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Mikes and also intercepted a pass.

“We felt like he was healthy enough,” said Shiner coach Steven Cerny said of Palmer. “He showed some good things tonight. He played really well.”

The Comanches improved to 6-1 despite playing without running back Donyai Taylor, who Cerny said missed the game for “personal reasons.”

But Mikes carried eight times for 91 yards, and Zane Rhodes had eight carries for 138 yards, including touchdown runs of 62 and 50 yards in the second half.

Shiner rushed for 348 yards and averaged more than 9 yards per attempt.

“We backed off this week. We were tired,” Cerny said. “I thought we looked a lot quicker than we have been. We had some fresh legs. Zane came in and he’s fast. We like to try and keep him back a little bit when people wear down and he showed his speed there.”

Shiner lost three fumbles, muffed a punt and had an interception, but stopped the Wildcats on a fourth-and-one attempt from the Yorktown 35 in the first quarter and Palmer scored the Comanches’ first touchdown three plays later.

“Yes, that was a big one,” Cerny said. “I think everybody kind of overlooked that. We had a couple of fumbles or we may have done something earlier. Yeah, we turned it on. I think our whole key was the offensive line. We went right at them and they opened up some big holes early and we just wore them down.”

The lone touchdown for Yorktown (5-2) came on a 27-yard run by backup quarterback Mark Guerrero with 28 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

“They’re one of the most physical teams you’re going to find not only in this region, but in the state,” said Yorktown coach John David Caffey. “My hat’s off to them because they’re incredibly well coached and they played really hard.”

The Wildcats lost to quarterback Josh Garcia to an ankle injury when he was horse-collared on a sack in the third quarter.

“Coming off an injury like last year, I think he’s in good spirits,” Caffey said of Garcia, who missed last season with a knee injury. “It takes a toll on you but he’ll be back.”

Shiner dropped from No. 2 to No. 4 in the Class 2A state poll following last week’s loss to Lexington.

But the Comanches made sure the setback didn’t linger.

“We’ve been working all week after that loss to Lexington,” Palmer said. “That riled us up a little bit so we wanted to come out and show them what we got.”
