SHINER – Shiner coach Steven Cerny admitted his offense was sputtering in the first two weeks of the season. But he said the unit has come a long way during the past two weeks, and the Comanches were at full strength Friday night in a dominating 48-6 victory over Tidehaven.

“I thought we came out and played really well,” Cerny said. “The offense got off with a bang, hit them quick. I thought we looked quick. I thought we played fast, and I thought we were very aggressive on defense. I was really pleased with our performance.”

Shiner capped its opening drive with a 29-yard scoring run by junior running back Donyai Taylor and never looked back. Taylor would add scoring runs of 70, 57 and 3 yards and finished the night with 221 rushing yards on 14 carries.

“Our offensive line came off the ball and got on their linebackers pretty quick, so it opened up the holes pretty fast,” Taylor said. “I just hit the holes and took off.”

As big as Taylor’s contributions were, Cerny said it was a team effort that won the night for the Comanches (4-0).

“Donyai had a great game, but one thing we have going for us right now is whoever is on the field, those 11 guys are going hard and contributing,” Cerny said. “Donyai’s a very talented player, but he’s got a good cast around him, too. We did a great job on the offensive line, opening up some holes tonight. (Quarterback) Tyler Mikes did a good job of bouncing back off his injury and playing tonight as well.”

Senior running back Lane Nevlud ran for a 43-yard score early in the second quarter, and freshman fullback Doug Brooks added a 13-yard scoring run late in the quarter as Shiner took a 34-0 advantage into the half.

“The last two weeks now, we feel like we’ve made a big step,” Cerny said. “We’re playing fast, and we’re still healthy. I was just proud of the overall effort.”

Taylor and Mikes had second-half scoring runs for Shiner. Junior quarterback Blake Garcia got the Tigers (0-4) on the board midway through the fourth quarter with a 67-yard scoring run.

“Physically, them boys are very impressive over there,” Tidehaven coach David Lucio said of the Comanches. “They just pushed us around. That’s what football’s about: who can push the other one harder. They’ve done a good job in the weight room, it looks like. We had a hard time tackling, a hard time getting off their blocks, a hard time pushing them out of the way and a hard time getting past their tackles. The main thing was just their physical dominance of us. Shiner is a very impressive team.”

Shiner, the No. 2 team in Class 2A in the latest AP poll, plays at Goliad, No. 2 in 3A, next Friday.

“It’s not a district game, but it will definitely be a gauge to see where we’re at,” Cerny said of the Goliad game. “I know Goliad is a very sound ball club. We just have to try to make ourselves better, and we’ll see what happens when Friday comes.”

Tidehaven, meanwhile, opens District 14-3A, Division II play at Danbury next Friday.

“We had a very tough pre-district schedule,” Lucio said. “It’s over now. We start district and we’re 0-0. We have Danbury, and every second of every game in our district, we have to fight like it’s the last second of our lives, and that’s how we have to handle it. We don’t forget about the pre-district. We don’t forget the losses, but for us, the real season starts now.”
