REFUGIO - Refugio sophomore Ysidro Mascorro has played on the varsity team since his freshman year.

One thing that hasn't changed for Mascorro in his two years on the team is his preparation.

"I watch a lot of film before every game," Mascorro said. "Every week, I watch film and once I get comfortable, I go to my teammates and talk to them about plays and help get everyone on the right track."

With the District 15-2A, Division I championship on the line, the 5-foot-9 running back/linebacker was as prepared as ever. He rushed for 71 yards and a touchdown on five carries to help lead the No. 6 Bobcats to a 35-0 win over Shiner on Friday ( November 10, 2017 ) at Jack Sportsman Bobcat Stadium.

Refugio wrapped up the regular season with an 8-1 record and captured the district title for the second straight year.

The Bobcats will play Ben Bolt in the bi-district round at 7 p.m. Thursday in Mathis.

"We showed how strong we are from going through a lot," Mascorro said about playing at home after Hurricane Harvey. "We showed our town how good we are and how we played as a team and picked each other up. I just wanted to help my team and play my heart out."

Nearly one year to the date, it was the same result for Shiner, which suffered a 35-0 loss with the district championship on the line last season.

The Comanches had their seven-game winning streak snapped, while falling to to 7-2 and 4-1. Shiner will enter the bi-district round as the No. 2 seed and will face Santa Maria at 7 p.m. Thursday in Robstown.

"I told the guys we came a long way," said Shiner coach Steven Cerny. "I told the kids we played a good football game, but we're not in Refugio's league yet. They showed they were a better team tonight, but at the same time we have to play to get better because it's the playoffs now. I'm challenging them to improve, and next week we have to take a step and worry about our next opponent."

In just its second home game of the season, Refugio defensive back Prentiss Jones seized an opportunity in the first quarter by converting on a 63-yard interception return to give the Bobcats an early 7-0 lead.

With 50 seconds left in the first quarter, Mascorro broke a tackle and ran 52 yards for a score to give the Bobcats a 14-0 lead.

Donavon Bailey pulled in a 10-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jared Kelly at the start of the second quarter for the Bobcats' third touchdown to give Refugio a 21-0 lead at halftime.

"What I'm most proud of is our kids put the focus and the work during the week," said Refugio coach Jason Herring. "Our kids knew they were playing a good football team in Shiner. The reason why we played good defense is because our kids got in four days of preparation. They were excited for this game and they executed flawlessly."

In the second half, the Bobcats continued making plays defensively, while Kelley began to get in a groove. Kelley, who began the game with 1,954 passing yards and an area-leading 28 touchdowns, added to those numbers by tossing three touchdowns.

He finished his night with 112 passing yards.

"We were all fired up with it being our seniors' last game at home," Kelley said. "Everything worked out in the end, and we're just doing what coach has asked us to do."

Refugio running back Daryon Ramirez also contributed by rushing for 67 yards and scoring on a 13-yard pass from Kelley in the third quarter to give the Bobcats a 28-0 lead.

"My team came a long way," Ramirez said. "Everyone doubted us and thought we weren't going to be the team we were last year because we lost so many seniors. But we proved that we can beat anybody - we just beat Shiner. People are doubting us about going back to state, but we can do it."

Jake Tinsman also recorded a touchdown for the Bobcats, who have now won six games in a row. Tinsman scored on a 21-yard pass from Kelley in the fourth quarter.

"I forgot how special it was to play at home because we were road warriors for seven weeks," Herring said. "Tonight, it felt the same way because there's something about playing at home in front of our fans. We played a good football team and I'm excited because we are peaking at the right time."

The Comanches were led by running backs Collin Bujnoch and Donyai Taylor, who had 60 yards rushing.

"Our guys didn't quit," Cerny said. "Our guys don't like losing but at the same time these guys played hard and they always will."
