The Comanches remain undefeated in district play, while the Indians suffered their third loss.
“The offensive and defensive line really did a good job. They controlled the game for us,” Shiner coach Steve Cerny said. “But we did well in all aspects of the game.”
Shiner came out strong in the first quarter, scoring four touchdowns. Jacob Cowan scored on runs of 4 and 3 yards. Donyai Taylor added a 6-yard scoring run and Cole Patek had a 30-yard touchdown reception from Tyler Mikes to put Shiner up 27-0.
Cowan finished the game with 84 yards rushing and two touchdowns.
“It was the line,” Cowan said. “The line does a really good job and they are pretty much family to me.”
The Comanches were able to add to their lead by scoring a touchdown in each quarter after that.
Ganado was coming off a loss to Weimar last week and struggled.
“I think what we did well is we had a whole bunch of kids respond to really bad stuff happening,” Indians coach Johnny Lesak said. “They found a way to make some good things happen. We need to execute from the start and not wait further into the game to get things going.”
The Comanches’ defense continued to shine , not allowing any touchdowns. Shiner has allowed just 14 points in district play.
The Comanches are using this win to fuel them for next week, when they take on Refugio. Both teams are undefeated in district play, and the game will determine the district champion.
“That’s what our goal was,” said Cerny. “We wanted to have a chance at a district championship.”
Cowan is confident in his team’s ability to bring a district championship back to Shiner.
“We’ve been working hard every week, and as long as we keep doing that, I think we can come out on top,” he said. “I feel like we are going to go all the way. That’s the only mindset I have as a senior.”
