SEGUIN - Shiner is headed back to the state tournament.
Down 1-0 in the Class 2A regional final series, Shiner came back with a Game 2 victory 8-4 and won the deciding game 6-2 to wrap up the series and advanced to its second straight trip to the UIL State Tournament.
Shiner will be joined by Windthorst, Harleton and Crawford in the state semifinal at Texas-Austin's Red & Charline McCombs Field at 9 a.m. or noon Wednesday.
The final matchups will be announced Sunday.
In Game 2, Hannah Nevlud, Bethany Nevlud, Cece Darilek and Kailey Williams had RBI singles in a five-run third that staked Shiner to a 5-0 cushion. After Shiner had three runners cut down on the bases in the fourth, a three-run fifth extended the lead to 8-0. Weimar rallied with four runs late, but fell short to tie the match at one game apiece.
In Game 3, Weimar got on the board first with a run in the second inning, but Shiner answered with four runs including a three-run home run by Bethany Nevlud for a 4-1 lead in the third. The score was 4-2 when Darilek collected a RBI hit and Lauren Schuette recorded a sacrifice fly in the fifth. Smith’s two-run home run in the seventh only brought the Lady Cats closer.
