"It's amazing I made it that long," Turek joked.
Actually, they have been productive years for Turek and the Comanches, especially this season.
Shiner went 10-0 and won the District 15-2A, Division I championship, before advancing to the quarterfinals and finishing with a 13-1 record.
Turek's defense allowed an average of 7.5 points per game and had six shutouts.
Shiner's defensive play led to Turek's selection as Dave Campbell's Texas Football 2015 Assistant Coach of the Year.
Turek was one five nominees for the award and was selected in a fan ballot that was announced Monday.
We have always considered defense important in Shiner," Turek said. "Coach (Steven) Cerny makes defense real important. We spend as much time practicing defense as we do offense. A lot of teams don't do like we do. We pretty much go half and half."
The results paid off for the Comanches, who allowed no more than one touchdown in four games.
"As a head coach, you're not going to get a better assistant than coach Turek," Cerny said. " He's been in my position and he understands both sides. He's a student of the game. He watches more film than anyone. He knows the game and the kids respect him."
