The No. 4 Comanches then went out and proceeded to get an even bigger "W".
Shiner scored three touchdowns in the third quarter and ran off with a 30-19 win over No. 5 Refugio in Friday night's District 15-2A, Division I opener for both teams.
"To win big games, you've got to have big plays," said Shiner coach Steven Cerny. "We had big plays out of a lot of kids tonight."
The Comanches improved to 6-0, and ended Refugio's 49-game district winning streak in the process.
Shiner handed the Bobcats (4-2) their first district loss since 2006.
"It's not only that," Cerny said. "It's Refugio and they're very good. I thought our guys played as good of a game as you could possibly ask except for the few turnovers."
The Comanches took a 10-6 lead into halftime before breaking the game open in the third quarter.
Shiner running back Dadrian Taylor ran 50 yards for a touchdown on the Comanches' first series, and Charles Haynes returned an interception 30 yards for a touchdown on the next play from scrimmage.

Quarterback Brandon Cerny added a 32-yard touchdown run to build a 24-point lead.
"We started to establish a little power and got a feel for what they were doing," said Steven Cerny, whose team attempted only one pass and had it intercepted. "We told them we had to control the ball. We scored quickly. Those were two big plays by Taylor and Haynes. But you saw our offensive and defensive line -- they go both ways, and those guys battled until the end."
Haynes had two of Shiner's three interceptions (Taylor had the other) and returned his second pick 50 yards to set up Brandon Cerny's touchdown run.
"I can't believe it," Haynes said. "It started off rough at first. The first pick I was happy we were able to come up and stop them. I thought I was going to score on the next one but he caught me."
Brandon Cerny carried 21 times for 113 yards and two touchdowns, and directed a Shiner offense that was able to keep the ball away from Refugio.

"That was our game plan to control the ball down the field and just kill the clock," he said. "Our defense just played exceptional today. We got some big plays on defense and we stopped them and we just kept on rolling."
Refugio scored on the game's first possession on a 28-yard pass from Jaylon Mascorro to Les Rhodes.
But the Bobcats didn't score again until the fourth quarter. Refugio went three-and-out four times in addition to their three turnovers.
Refugio running back Isaiah Perez separated his shoulder on the opening kickoff. Perez attempted to play, but was limited.
"We just didn't play very well," said Refugio coach Jason Herring. "We practiced really well. I thought we were focused, but we had a ton of drama the last 48 hours and we played that way. We made way too many mistakes against a team like Shiner. They did a heck of a job. They're very well coached and very disciplined. They do a great job at what they do."
Shiner fumbled six times and lost two in addition to the interception, but its defense was able to limit the damage.
"What worried me is it was four quarters," Steven Cerny said. "We have so many guys going both ways and we were getting tired and so were they. We found some extra energy that you don't just make. It comes from the heart and it comes from the guts."
