SHINER - The Shiner Comanches continued their winning ways on Friday night at Comanche Stadium, defeating the Class 3A Rice Consolidated Raiders 49-34. Shiner finished up their pre-district schedule against larger schools with a record of 5-0.

The first quarter was a high scoring affair with both teams scoring early and often. Shiner received the opening kickoff, but fumbled deep in their own territory on the first play from scrimmage. Rice scored just three plays later to take a 6-0 lead.

The Comanches returned the favor just a couple minutes later, on a 49-yard pass from QB Blake Michalec to WR Dadrian Taylor streaking down the sidelines. Chad Neubauer's kick was good and Shiner went up 7-6.

The teams traded possessions until the Raiders scored on a 30-yard pass from QB Jordan Johnson to WR Jaquad McGrew. The two point conversion was good and Rice took a 14-7 lead.

Chad Neubauer broke off a 20-yard scoring run with just under 2 minutes remaining in the first quarter, his PAT kick was good and the Comanches tied it up at 14-14. On the last play of the first quarter, Rice receiver McGrew ran a stop-and-go route to fool the Comanche defenders and scored on a 56-yard pass from Johnson. Kicker Daniel Cantu's PAT was good and Rice led 21-14 after the first.

Rice's lead was short-lived as Taylor returned the kickoff up the middle, gathered a few key blocks and went the distance for six. Neubauer's PAT counted and Shiner tied it up at 21-21.

Shiner scored two more TD's in the second: Neubauer busted off a 25-yard scoring run and Tyler Patek scored again from the 26 about three minutes later. Shiner led 35-21 at halftime.

After the break, the teams again traded possessions until Raider RB Marcus Cooper scored his second TD of the night. Just a couple minutes later, Michalec led the Comanches down the field and punched it in from 3 yards out to give Shiner a 42-27 lead.

After another long Comanche drive, Patek scored again midway through the fourth quarter and Neubauer kicked his 7th successful PAT to extend Shiner's lead to 49-27. With 5:18 remaining, Rice's Johnson scored from a yard out to narrow the score to 49-34, but they couldn't manage any further progress and the game ended with no more scoring.

Chad Neubauer and Tyler Patek led Shiner's powerful ground attack with 140 yards each and Blake Michalec added 51 more rushing yards. Michalec completed just one pass on the night, the 49-yard scoring strike to Dadrian Taylor.

The Comanches have a bye next week. The following week, on October 11, Shiner will take on the Refugio Bobcats in Refugio for their first district game. Both teams advanced to the state championship game in their respective divisions last season.
