No problems for Shiner in rematch with Weimar

SEGUIN - Shiner wasn't scared of the speed Weimar possessed on offense, but the Comanches were certainly aware of the threat the Wildcats brought into Friday's Class 1A, Division I regional round game.
The Comanches (11-1) adjusted its defense to get more speed on the field and it paid off with a convincing 27-6 victory over the Wildcats (7-5).
Shiner forced three turnovers and a pivotal turnover on downs midway through the second quarter to keep a potent Weimar offense off the scoreboard until there were 10 minutes left in the game.
"It just feels like we've made major improvements over time," said Shiner linebacker Caleb Kalich. "The coaches have done a good job of working us in the categories we lacked. We have made major improvements, you can tell with this game score right here."
When the teams met in early October, Shiner eked out a 33-32 win. Friday's game was not that close due to a pair of Weimar turnovers in the first half - one of their doing and the other due to Shiner's stout defense.
Chad Neubauer ended the first Weimar possession when he returned Juwan Almeida's second pass of the game 69 yards for a touchdown with 10:06 remaining in the first quarter.
"I was sitting there. I went to the flats and I happened to be in the throwing lane," recalled Neubauer about his first ever defensive touchdown. "I caught it, but I kind of bobbled it. When I bobbled it, I stopped, caught it again and then I ran with it."
In the second quarter, a 12-play Weimar drive ended in no points after running back DeLexus Gordon was stopped on fourth and goal with four minutes remaining in the first half.
Weimar's offense was reduced to a three-and-out on its two other first half possessions.
Meanwhile, Shiner ate up the yards and the clock in the first half. The Comanche's first two offensive possessions ended in Evel Jones touchdown runs. The senior running back ran for 154 yards on 17 carries Friday.
Shiner quarterback Trevion Flowers ran for 43 yards and a touchdown. During the Comanches final touchdown drive, which Flowers capped off with 8:43 left in the third, the senior topped the 1,000 yard plateau for the season with a 14-yard run.
"In the first half I thought we came out and played extremely well, offensively and defensively," said Shiner football coach Steven Cerny. "We always preach about big plays. We had a big play out of Neubauer and we had big plays on defense."
But, the 40th all-time meeting between the two schools was a defensive masterclass for the Comanches. Cerny said as much after the game, so did his counterpart, Zack Hudson.
"It was one of those games we needed to execute better and we didn't," Hudson said. "Then with turnovers and momentum, when that happens, I don't care who you play its hard to win."
Entering, Friday's game Weimar running back JaKyle Harris had 1,435 yards and 15 rushing touchdowns. The junior ran for another 116 yards, but Shiner's defense kept him out the end zone.
Almeida threw a 7 yard touchdown to Torre Johnson with 10:48 remaining for Weimar's only score of the night. However, he was also intercepted three times. Neubauer pilfered one and junior Brian Kloesel intercepted two other Weimar passes.
Shiner advances to the quarterfinals, where they will once again meet undefeated Mason. The game will be at a time and place to be determined. However, there is one certainty about next week's Class 1A, Division I quarterfinal - the Comanches plan to play better this time.
"I couldn't be more ready for it. It feels good," Kalich said. "If there is one team I want to play this year, it's Mason. .After a nine-turnover game and a score that got out of hand on us, it feels like this year we are ready for them."
