KATY -- Shiner relied heavily on the Eric Murphy and Ray Gates show Friday night.

The two running backs combined for 308 yards and seven touchdowns as the Comanches annihilated the High Island Cardinals 50-0 in a Class 1A regional quarterfinal at Jack Rhodes Stadium.

The win improved the No.1-ranked Comanches to 13-0, while High Island ended the season at 9-3. The Comanches will now meet Burkeville, a 36-21 winner over Falls City.

It took the Comanches just one defensive play to set the tone for the contest.

On High Island's first offensive play, the Cardinals put the ball on the ground with Shawn Flores recovering for the Comanches at the Cardinals' 15.

On the next play, Murphy broke free, racing 15 yards for the touchdown. Tyler Johnson added the extra point and with 11:39 showing the Comanches had a 7-0 lead and never looked back.

Murphy, who finished with 104 yards on 13 carries, added touchdown runs of 6 and 1 yards.

Gates, meanwhile, powered his way to 204 yards rushing on 13 carries with TD runs of 47, 4, 15 and 2 yards as the Comanches finished with 430 yards on 43 carries. Travis Wright added 76 yards on five carries.

Gates followed Murphy's first score with a 47-yard jaunt and a 14-0 Shiner lead in the first quarter.

Murphy opened the second-quarter scoring with a 6-yard run at the 11:03 mark and Gates followed four minutes later, slipping in from 4 yards out.

After Murphy bulled in from the 1 with 1:21 left, Brett Siegel set the Comanches right back up, returning a High Island interception 36 yards to the 15. Gates went the distance from that point, putting the Comanches up 43-0 at the half.

With the clock running continuously in the second half, the Comanches added the lone score with 9:21 to play in the third quarter on a 2-yard run from Gates.
