CONROE -- Turning three turnovers into scores, the Burkeville Mustangs rolled to a 38-22 Class 1A regional playoff win over the Shiner Comanches Friday night at Moorhead Memorial Stadium.
It was the second straight year for the Mustangs to eliminate the Comanches from the playoffs. Burkeville (7-4) advanced to the quarterfinals and will meet West Sabine, a 46-34 winner over Falls City. Shiner finished the season at 8-4.
The Comanches turned the ball over six times with the Mustangs turning three into scores and using the last one to clinch the victory.
Jonathan and Brandon Lewis teamed up to provide most of the first-half offensive punch for the Mustangs.
Jonathan Lewis, who rushed for 220 yards on 15 carries, sparked the Mustangs to a 12-0 first quarter lead, scoring on a 38-yard run at the 10:30 mark before going 80 yards with a punt return with 8:47 left in the period.
He opened the second-quarter scoring with a 94-yard scamper just 54 seconds into the period.
Down 18-0, things began to fall apart for the Comanches as the Mustangs scored their next three touchdowns off of Comanche turnovers.
The first came less than a minute after Lewis' long run with Brandon Lewis breaking free on a 46-yard jaunt to the end zone and a 24-0 halftime lead.
Shiner broke the ice with a two-play, 68-yard drive to start the second half.
Garet Pustka hit Steven Evans on a 27-yard strike to open the drive and Bryan Franklin followed with a 41-yard sprint to the end zone. The two-point try failed and the Mustangs held on to a 24-6 lead.
Two straight turnovers and the Mustangs were headed to the end zone again with Eric Spearman scoring on an 8-yard run and Jonathan Lewis striking again from 5 yards out.
Shiner began to make its run as Pustka ran 6 yards for the score and added a two-point conversion to cut the lead to 38-14 with 20 seconds left in the third period.
Pustka, who threw for 90 yards, then hooked up with Franklin on a 25-yard scoring strike with 7:53 to play.
