SEGUIN - The Shiner Comanches defeated the Charlotte Trojans in the area round of the Class 1A playoffs for the second year in a row with a 21-6 victory Friday night.
Dustin Mayberry put in a solid night's work with 91 yards on 16 carries and a touchdown. Mayberry's touchdown came in the fourth quarter and ended up being the score that put Shiner ahead for good.
The Trojans scored their lone touchdown in the second quarter when Carlos Tijerina connected with Preston Castillo for a 13-yard touchdown, but they failed to convert the extra point. It was the first points Shiner had allowed in 11 quarters.
Shiner's Ryan Kloesel scored on a 20-yard interception return in the third quarter to give Shiner a 14-6 lead. The Comanches intercepted three of Tijerina's passes in the game, the one by Kloesel and two by Josh Nance.
Dexter Mayberry closed out the scoring for Shiner with an eight-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
Friday's win is another in a string of victories the Comanches had enjoyed against Charlotte dating back to 2000 when the teams were in the same district. Shiner was undefeated against Charlotte from 2000 to 2003 and defeated them in the playoffs last year as well.
Shiner advances to play the winner of the Chilton-Rocksprings game.
