WIMBERLEY -- The top-ranked Shiner Comanches overcame the Harper Longhorns, 14-0, for a Class 1A bi-district playoff win Saturday afternoon.
The game was played on a rain-soaked field in cold weather that slowed the Comanches (11-0), who compiled only 113 yards of offense.
Shiner's only offensive touchdown came with 5:31 left in the half on a 23-yard run by Ray Gates, who was held to 58 yards on 11 carries.
Travis Wright had 28 yards on seven carries and competed 1 of 2 passes for minus-3 yards to Gates.
The Comanche defense came up with four interceptions, including one by Josh Smith that he returned 45 yards for a touchdown with 2:56 left in the game.
Adam Dawson, Brett Siegel and Kelsey Pohler also had interceptions. Pohler's came with 16 seconds left to play.
Harper (9-2) had 303 yards of offense, including 197 on the ground. Quint Kunz rushed for 125 yards on 25 carries while quarterback Dusty Gibbs gained 72 yards on 15 carries and completed 5 of 18 passes for 106 yards. Cole Cantwell had three catches for 64 yards.
Shiner had just three first downs as compared to Harper's 12 but punter David Evans kept the Longhorns penned deep in their own territory, as he punted five times for a 35-yard average.
Shiner advances to the area round against Benavides (4-5), which had a first-round bye.
