FLORESVILLE - Brady Cejka was studying more than math and English this week.

"Our coaches tell us you've got to do your homework," Cejka said. "That's what we all did for this game. I was at home and I was studying. You have to do homework to play a good game, especially against a team like them because they're a good team."

Cejka had two of Shiner's four interceptions to help the Comanches run off with a 35-6 Class 1A, Division I bi-district win over Kenedy on a chilly Thursday night at Eschenburg Field here.

The Comanches (6-5) moved over .500 for the first time this season and advanced to the area round against Brackett. The game has been scheduled for Friday, Nov. 18 at 7:30 p.m. in Somerset.

The Shiner defense limited the Lions (6-5) to 102 yards of net offense. Zach Lawrence and Trevion Flowers also had interceptions for the Comanches.

"Our coach made us practice really well," Cejka said. "He said they threw 40 times last game so we were prepared. I was mentally prepared. I knew they were they were going to throw and I had a pretty good game."

Kenedy quarterback Rolie Zepeda threw 31 times and completed 14, including seven to Tristan Mejia, who caught a 5-yard touchdown pass. But Kenedy had only 86 yards passing and Zepeda was sacked three times.

"We couldn't get in a rhythm," said Kenedy coach Lin Havron. "We just seemed like we were on our heels the whole first half. They won the turnover battle and that's the difference in the game."

Shiner rushed for 240 yards, including touchdown runs of 1 yard by Jacob Stafford, 11 yards by Caleb Curtis, and 29 yards by Evel Jones. Stafford also threw touchdown passes of 12 yards to Caleb Kalich and 26 yards to Jones.

But Shiner coach Steven Cerny was not happy with the overall performance of the offense.

"I wasn't too pleased with the execution of our veer," Cerny said. "I don't know what it was but we came out flat. It could have been playing on Thursday and this was Stafford's first playoff game. Whatever it was, we need to play better."

Cejka returned his two interceptions for 21 yards and had two punt returns for 25 yards. He came in at quarterback after Stafford was shaken up, but wound up taking a timeout and Stafford returned to the game.
