Shiner meets Kenedy in bi-district match

Kenedy and Shiner are not complete strangers on the football field.
The teams last played in 2000 and Shiner came away with a 37-6 non-district win.
The stakes will be quite a bit higher when Shiner (5-5) and Kenedy (6-4) meet in a Class 1A, Division I bi-district game Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Eschenburg Field in Floresville.
Shiner will be making its 14th consecutive postseason appearance, including 12 straight since becoming a Class 1A team. The Comanches advanced to the regional round last season.
Kenedy returns to the playoffs for the second consecutive year after snapping an eight-year drought last season. The Lions are seeking their first postseason win since 1998.
Shiner started the season 1-4 and dropped its District 15-1A opener to top-ranked Ganado before winning its last four games.
Shiner's veer offense has produced 2,471 rushing yards and its defense has limited opponents to an average of 219.2 yards per game. Quarterback Jacob Stafford has led the way by rushing for 634 yards and 13 touchdowns.

"The bottom line is you have to play well in all areas in the playoffs," said Shiner coach Steven Cerny. "Their quarterback is a good athlete. He hasn't been sacked much. Their receivers don't have a lot of speed, but they run great routes and have good hands. Defensively they like to attack and cause mistakes. We've been playing pretty well lately and we need to continue that."
Kenedy finished third in District 16-1A behind district-champion Ben Bolt and La Villa.
The Lions aren't shy about throwing the ball. Quarterback Rolie Zepeda has passed for 1,391 yards and 20 touchdowns, and Tristan Mejia has an area-leading 51 receptions for 626 yards and 12 touchdowns.
"We have to force fumbles by attacking the mesh point on the veer," said Kenedy coach Lin Havron. "We have to force them to throw. On offense, we need to control the ball and make first downs to keep their offense off the field."
The winner will advance to the area round against Brackett, which has a first-round bye.
