PFLUGERVILLE - Holly Haas went 2-for-3 with three RBIs to lead the Class A No. 1-ranked Shiner softball team to a 4-3 victory over North Zulch in the opening game of a regional quarterfinal best-of-three series Wednesday at Hendrickson High School here.
Shiner (25-4) scored all four of its runs in the first three innings, and a trio of North Zulch errors contributed to the Lady Comanches' cause. After Lady Bulldogs' pitcher Erin Diserens struck out the first two batters of the contest, back-to-back errors put Kristen Schacherl and Ryah Michalek on base for Haas, who sent both runners across the plate with a single to shallow right field.
Haas' hit gave Shiner a 2-0 lead in the middle of the first inning. The Lady Comanches' 2-0 lead stood until the top of the third when they scored two more runs on a trio of hits, an error and a walk.
Ashley Shimek led off with a single, Amber Ramirez reached on an error and Michalek hit a one-out single to load the bases for Haas. Haas sent Shimek home with a single and Ramirez crossed the plate after Juliana Rankin drew a bases-loaded walk to give Shiner a 4-0 lead.
North Zulch (18-7) answered in the bottom of the second with a two-run threat of its own. MiKayla Imhoff advanced to second on a two-out error before scoring on a Jenna Wiltshire double.
Wiltshire later advanced to third on a passed ball before Katie Gilbert sent her across the plate with a single. The Lady Bulldogs pulled within two, 4-2, after three innings of play.
North Zulch added another run in the bottom of the fourth as Diserens led off the frame by getting hit by a pitch.
Diserens took second on a passed ball before moving to third on an error and scoring on a Codi Poston sacrifice bunt to cut the Shiner lead to one, 4-3.
Following the fourth inning, Shimek retired nine of the last 10 batters to help the Lady Comanches escape with the Game One victory.
In addition to Haas' 2-for-3, 3-RBI performance, Shimek, Schacherl and Michalek also had hits. Rankin drew a pair of walks and recorded an RBI.
The teams meet again at 6 p.m. Friday at Hendrickson. A third game, if necessary, will take place at 6 p.m. Saturday at Hendrickson.
