SHINER - Two early defensive stands and better execution on special teams pushed the Shiner Comanches past the Louise Hornets 15-14 in both team's District 31-1A opener.
Tied 8-8 at the intermission, the Comanche's Cody Franke returned the opening kickoff of the second half 89 yards for a touchdown. Kyle Condel added the PAT kick that turned out to be the difference for Shiner (2-3, 1-0). Louise (2-3, 0-1) came back with a touchdown of their own in the fourth on a 21-yard touchdown run by C.J. Clements but the kick failed.
The bulk of the first quarter was played in the Comanche end of the field. But the Hornets were forced to turn the ball over on downs on their opening drive at the Shiner two. Following a Shiner fumble, Louise gave the ball back on an interception.
Shiner's second fumble of the quarter was turned into points by the Hornets on a 11-yard run by Kyle Lawson with 0:32 to go in the quarter. Shiner answered midway through the second on a 10-yard run by Dexter Mayberry.
C.J. Clements led Louise with 59 yards on 3 carries while Condel had 19 rushes for 71 yards.
