SHINER - Derrick Wilson figures he's a better player this season because East Bernard has improved so much as a team.

Wilson continued to add to his impressive resume by running for 170 yards and three touchdowns, returning a kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown, and adding a sack from his linebacker position to lead the Brahmas to a 48-20 win over Shiner on Friday night at Comanche Stadium.

"Since coach (Jerry) Long came in our practices are more disciplined and we go hard all the time," Wilson said. "If we keep playing hard and cut down on our penalties, we can be a pretty good team."

East Bernard rolled up 440 rushing yards while improving to 3-0 for the first time since 1998.

"We're really picking it up," Long said. "Of course, it helps to have those deep threats. They can make 20 to 30 yards out of nothing."

East Bernard threw only twice and did not complete a pass, but it hardly mattered. The Brahmas had 11 runs of 10 yards or more and picked up 18 of its 19 first downs on the ground and punted only once while sending Shiner to its third straight defeat.

The Comanches have surrendered 40 points or more in each of their losses and are 0-3 for the first time since 1997.

"We have some young kids and they still have to mature," Shiner coach Steven Cerny said. "We've been very positive. We know we're doing things wrong and we're not very good tacklers right now. But it's like I told the kids, we're going to watch the film in the morning, look at our mistakes, and we're going to keep getting better."

Wilson has continued to show improvement since committing to Tulane this summer. He carried only 12 times but scored on runs of 19, 83, and 8 yards. Wilson started the second half off by racing down the East Bernard sideline and leaping over Shiner kicker Kyle Condel en route to the end zone. He also raced into the Shiner backfield from his linebacker position and sacked Condel for an 8-yard loss on the Comanches' first possession of the third quarter.

"I think the commitment (to Tulane) helped him so much," Long said of Wilson. "I think he took that to heart. You can see how much more confident he is and how hard he is playing."

Long helped get the East Bernard offense started by switching from the spread to the wing-T and the Brahmas seem to have picked it right up.

"We're three yards and a cloud of dust," Long said. "It was tough for them going from the spread. But three can become 70 real quick with these guys."

East Bernard also scored on runs of 52 and 7 yards by quarterback Oshundrick Thomas, who carried eight times for 76 yards, and a 72-yard run by Mike Hayes, who carried for 115 yards.

"This offense is so good for us," Wilson said. "We run so much misdirection that you never know where the ball is going."

Shiner scored first on a 55-yard touchdown run by Condel and added 3-yard touchdown run by Cody Franke to pull within 21-13 in the second quarter.

But Hayes scored with 1:50 left before halftime and the Brahmas scored 20 consecutive points in the second half before the Comanches completed the scoring on a 1-yard run by Condel with 3:00 remaining in the fourth quarter.

"This one worried me all week long," Long said. "They have great tradition and coach Cerny does an outstanding job. They probably won't lose another game. We still need to get better in the line, but those guys are doing a lot better there. If we can continue to play like this, we can be pretty good."
