WALLIS -- Talk about an emotional roller coaster.
Shiner defeated Brazos Consolidated 21-20, but not before the scales were almost tipped -- literally.
With less than a minute to play, Brazos Consolidated, down 21-14, faced a fourth and 32 from its own 39. Quarterback Caleb Little dropped back and launched a deep pass. A Shiner defensive back swatted the ball toward the ground.
But the tipped ball fell in the lap of Brazos receiver Josh Johnson, who grabbed the Hail Mary and ran 61 yards for a touchdown. Johnsonís team was a point from tying the game.
But Victor Carbajal, the Brazos place kicker, missed the extra point.
This last-minute nail biter ended 58 seconds later with Shiner moving to 2-0 and Brazos dropping to 1-1.
Shiner earns the win despite some glaring holes: eight turnovers, seven penalties and only 3 yards through the air.
On the ground, though, Josh Greathouse led the Commanches with 17 carries for 159 yards and a score. Adam Kalich added 82 yards on eight carries, including a 39-yard TD scamper to end the first quarter.
Shiner tallied 336 yards on the ground.
Brazos, meanwhile, struggled through the air and on the ground. The team gained 93 yards on the ground but only averaged 3.2 yards per touch.
Little tossed for 76 yards and one exciting touchdown.
