Drabek selected top 5A player
TSWA all-state baseball squad includes numerous Advocate area players

Kyle Drabek, the son of Victoria native and Cy Young Award winner Doug Drabek, was named the Class 5A Player of the Year on the Texas Sports Writers Association All-State Baseball Team. The Woodlands junior was also picked as a pitcher on the Class 5A first team.
He compiled an 11-1 record with an 0.79 earned run average with 156 strikeouts in 71 innings. Drabek played shortstop when not pitching and batted .500 with 32 RBIs.
State semifinalist Yoakum placed two seniors on the Class 3A first team.
Bulldog pitcher Riley Boening was joined on the first team by teammate Jace Braden, an outfielder.
Hallettsville senior Jason Etzler was picked to the second team as an outfielder.
And a trio of seniors earned honorable mention recognition in 3A, including Yoakum pitcher Travis Starling, Wharton first baseman Wade Mathis and Hallettsville shortstop Blake Appelt.
East Bernard's Kyle Koenig headed the Class 2A first team from his third baseman position while Weimar's senior first baseman Willie Janecka was named to the second team. The third team included a pair of Schulenburg juniors - Steve Simons at first base and Colby Bohac at second base.
Yorktown senior Brett Gips and Schulenburg junior Jared Trojacek headed a large group receiving honorable mention recognition in Class 2A. Gips and Trojacek were both picked at two positions.
Gips was picked at pitcher and at third base and Trojacek was picked at pitcher and in the outfield.
Others drawing honorable mention attention were senior pitcher Shane Janecka of Weimar, junior catcher Ryan Besetzny and sophomore shortstop Jason Cummins of Schulenburg, senior catcher Tyler Strieber of Yorktown, junior shortstop Matt King of East Bernard and senior outfielder Cody Hoffman of Bloomington.
Shiner's Scott Shimek was selected to two positions on the Class 1A team. He was picked as a first team pitcher and was an honorable mention pick at first base.
Flatonia senior Galen Dunk was named to the first team as an outfielder.
Shiner also placed three players on the third team - senior Chris Baer at catcher, senior Jared Boedeker at third base and junior Ryan Kloesel at shortstop. Flatonia senior Ronnie Lester made the third team at shortstop.
Shiner junior pitcher Colten Henley and Flatonia junior third baseman Jim Schneider received honorable mention recognition.
In Class 4A, El Campo junior Cody Poncik made the second team at shortstop while Ricebird junior outfielder Mikey Kennedy and Beeville senior pitcher Eric Vasquez were honorable mention selections.
Calallen's Steve Chapman, a native of Hallettsville, was picked as the coach of the year in Class 4A.
