BUDA -- When the Shiner Comanches had the ball they were dangerous. They just couldnít keep their hands on it enough.
Shiner lost four fumbles and were kept off the field by a clock-draining Granger team in a 35-28 Class 1A, Division I quarterfinal loss Friday at Bob Shelton Stadium. Shiner, who finishes the season at 9-4, only had one offensive possession in the second half as the Lions held the ball for all but 3:14 of that time.
"It was a great game with both teams playing hard," Shiner head coach Steven Cerny said. "Itís a shame we had the turnovers, but thatís something thatís going to happen when teams are playing hard."
Despite not possessing the ball offensively in the second half, Shiner scored 14 points in the third quarter off a Devin Hester-type performance from Cody Franke. Playing in his final game as a Comanche, Franke returned a punt back 91 yards and returned a kickoff back 84 yards for touchdowns in the third quarter.
"That was an awesome performance from him," said Cerny of Franke. "He didnít get very many opportunities this season, but in a big game he showed what he can do. That was just an awesome effort from him."
Grangerís Clay Mazoch led the Lions with 131 yards, while Bradley Sims ran for 125 yards and two touchdowns. Kenny Sifuentes threw for 118 yards on eight completions along with a touchdown for the Lions.
Senior quarterback Kyle Condel led Shinerís offense with 112 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Condel scored the first touchdown of the game on a 59-yard run through the middle of the Lionsí defense, while adding his second score on a 66- yard sprint.
Granger scored its first touchdown as Mazoch scored on a 6-yard run with five seconds remaining in the first quarter.
Granger struck as time expired in the second quarter as Sifuentes threw to the right corner of the end zone to Stephen Brosch, who had single-coverage, went up to give the Lions a 21-14 lead at halftime.
Brosch and Sifuentes connected three times in the first half for 37 yards. The Lions had 41 yards passing in the first half, while running the ball 26 times for 133 yards on the Comanchesídefense.
Shiner finished the first half with 171 yards of offense. The lone passing yards came as Condel found Drew Stafford for a 9-yard completion.
The Lions advanced in the Class 1A playoffs after running for 326 yards on 61 carries, while also passing for 118 yards. Shinerís high-powered offense was held to 192 yards rushing on 21 carries. The Comanches only had seven offensive plays in the second half, and finished the game with 201 yards of total offense.
"Our guys played really hard,"Cerny said. "You have to give Granger a lot of credit. I thought we were able to move the ball, it was just some tough breaks that come with the game."
