The Shiner Comanches, despite being out-hit ten to six, defeated the Johnson City Eagles 11-4 to even their best of three Region IV Championship Series at one game apiece.

Game Three of the series will be Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m at North East Stadium, with the winner representing Region IV in the State Tournament, the state semifinals are Wednesday at the Dell Diamond.

Joey Gamez (12-3) struck out just one, and retired the side in order only in the second inning. Despite giving up ten hits, walking five, and working around five errors, he gave up only four runs -- three earned -- in six plus innings.

Gamez was helped out by three double plays. With the bases loaded in the third, and Johnson City having just tied the game at 1, Laramie Blackwell lined a Gamez pitched to second baseman Wesley Patek, who ran to second base to double off Luke Neely, turning an unassisted double play to end the inning.

Shiner (27-9) then took advantage of Johnson City errors and wildness to score nine runs combined in the third and fourth innings on just five hits. The first five Comanches reached in the third against Dylan Carter (7-2), with Coy Boedeker breaking the tie with an RBI walk and Cuatro Rankin breaking a personal 0-for-24 slump with a two-run single. Shiner was ahead for good 4-1.

The Comanches sent 11 batters to the plate in the fourth, adding six more runs and forcing a pitching change on just three hits. Two runs scored on wild pitches and one on a throwing error by the catcher. Brady Cejka’s triple into the right field corner was the highlight, and by the end of the onslaught, Shiner was ahead 10-1.

Gamez held Johnson City (29-6-1) to one run through five inning, but tired after that, giving up two runs in the fifth. Gamez allowed singles to Aaron Humphrey and Cody Smith to start the seventh, then walked Garrett Deleon to load the bases. After Gamez threw ball one to Jaxon Riebesehl, freshman lefthander Jacob Stafford came on in relief for the second time in the series. He got Riebesahl to ground into a run-scoring double play -- Shiner’s third of the game -- and got Kris McDonald to ground out to shortstop to win the game.
