CYPRESS - It took every player and support personnel, and fan or other supporter to help the Shiner football team return to the state championship game.

Shiner rallied to take down Region 3 champion Bremond 41-33 at Cy-Fair Federal Credit Union Stadium in Cypress on Thursday night [ December 12, 2024 ].

"It took everything, from our week of preparation, getting our scout team ready to show us what Bremond looks like on offense and defense. Credit to them and to the guys on the field who had to fight tonight," Comanches head coach Daniel Boedeker said. "We had some adversity, got down on the scoreboard but the players kept believing in each other and found ways to make plays. Us being able to make big plays was the difference in the game."

For the first time in a long time, the Comanches trailed, being down by multiple scores in the first quarter before pulling things together.

"We just kept on working together because we knew we could play better than Bremond. We just had a few mistakes early. We started to capitalize on what we could and began executing better," senior quarterback-defensive back Carson Schuette said.

"We kept our composure and did not panic. Our guys have been through a lot this year especially earlier in the season where we had adversity to deal with that helped us grow," Boedeker said. "We were confident in each other, knowing we would get the job done."

Shiner returns to the state championship game for the first time since 2021 when they won the second of two straight 2ADI titles.

The Comanches were scheduled to play Muenster, a 49-26 winner over Gruver in the other state semifinal, Wednesday night at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

"This is the greatest feeling in the world because last year we had a down season and the seniors worked very hard this offseason and to be going to state is the best feeling in the world," Schuette said.

"It's awesome because you don't realize how hard it is for the kids to be able to go and experience that. It was a total group effort for us to get there with the support we have from the community and school. It's everybody getting involved that helps get back to state," Boedeker said.

Schuette paced the Shiner offense with a monster rushing performance with 268 yards and four touchdowns with Caleb Lehnert and Quincy Jones adding one touchdown each.

The Tigers took a 12-0 lead in the first quarter, capitalizing on a slow Shiner first drive that led to a punt and a turnover deep inside Tiger territory.

Tiger running Tank Scott put Bremond up 6-0 with a 2-yard run that capped a 14-play, 55-yard drive after Shiner's first drive ended in a punt.

Schuette gained 56 yards on an option keeper to the Tiger 10 but two plays later, Bremond recovered a fumble at their 7 and drove 93 yards in 10 plays with offensive balance, including a key pass from quarterback Sam Kasowski to Braylon Estrada for 52 yards to the Shiner 29. Tyriq Scott ended the drive with a 5-yard run to give the Tigers a 12-0 lead with 19 seconds left in the first quarter.

On the next drive, Schuette threw two incomplete passes before hitting Jarvis Williams on a 31-yard pass to the Bremond 33 and two plays later, Caleb Lehnert scored on a 32-yard run at the 11:06 mark of the second quarter to cut Bremond's lead to 12-7 with the Jacob Nerada point after.

The Tigers lost a fumble around their 27 on the first play of the next drive and Shiner took a 14-12 lead on a 27-yard run by Schuette with 10:43 left in the first half. Bremond retook the lead at 18-14 on a three-play, 53-yard drive that saw Kasowski complete a 26-yard pass to Tristan Morehead and Tank Scott scored from the Shiner 15 on the next play.

Punts were exchanged on the next two drives with Shiner partially blocking the Bremond punt, resulting in a 21-yard kick to the Tiger 22. On the second play from the 21, Clayton Fric took an option pitch for 13 yards and Schuette scored on a sneak on the next play as the back-and-forth continued with a 21-18 Shiner lead.

Bremond reclaimed the advantage on an 18-yard pass from Kasowski to Morehead and Xavier Clark had a two-point run for a 26-21 Tiger lead with 2:09 left in the first half.

Shiner got put in a hole early on the next drive with a holding call but a 44-yard run by Fric on a delayed handoff and a 16-yard pass from Schuette to Williams got Shiner down to the Tiger 15, where a scramble by Schuette gave Shiner a 27-26 with just 64 seconds left in the first half after the two-point play failed.

Bremond went three and out on the first drive of the third quarter; Shiner drove 71 yards in 11 plays, overcame a holding call, had a 27-yard run by Caleb Cowan and a 24-yard pass from Schuette to Williams to eventually end in a Quincy Jones's 1-yard run for a 34-26 Shiner lead with 5:07 remaining the third.

Another fumble by Bremond, this time at the Shiner 35, proved costly for the Tigers to halt the drive but Shiner was unable to capitalize and punted.

Bremond was stopped on fourth down at the Shiner 19 on the next drive and Shiner drove the yards in 12 plays and over six minutes off the clock with some hard running by Schuette including runs of 12, 17 and 27. He scored on a sneak for a 41-26 lead with 3:21 left in the game.

The Tigers continued to fight and were able to score on a 58-yard pass from Kasowski to Morehead, their second combination of the night. Bremond kicked the point after to get within 41-33 with under three minutes left, tried two onside kicks after Shiner was called offsides on the first one but Shiner eventually got the kick.

Schuette ripped off a 49-yard run to the plus 18 and got Shiner inside the 10 before running out the rest of the clock.
