Shiner made the necessary corrections in the second half to turn a 21-7 advantage into a 45-7 final in the regional semifinals Friday night [ November 25, 2022] at Brahmas Memorial Stadium against rivals Flatonia.
Comanches head coach Daniel Boedeker said once Shiner started doing the small things right, they gained the momentum.
"We told them at halftime that it was not a very clean half and have to correct all of the little things in the second half, and go take care of business. We did a good job of correcting things."
Shiner got the usual day at the office from senior running back Dalton Brooks who ran for 297 yards and five touchdowns; senior Beck Bishop played a supporting role with another 51 yards and a touchdown.
"Offense really stepped up. We put a ton of points on the board against a very good Flatonia team. Overall, we played a good game," Beck Bishop said.
Shiner lost a fumble and turned the ball over on downs in the first quarter.
But the Comanches also recovered a fumble and got the quarter's only points on a 52-yard run by Brooks at the 3:33 mark.
Shiner limited Flatonia to just 204 yards and just 77 yards passing with the Comanches coming up with two interceptions.
"We figured out their offensive game plan, made some adjustments and took care on defense," Beck Bishop said.
"We knew Flatonia was going to be a good opponent; they looked good on film and we had some early challenges. We had an early turnover but I was proud of the way the kids hung in there," Boedeker said.
Late in the first quarter, Flatonia stopped Shiner on fourth and down at the Bulldog 34 and drove inside the 10, using the arm and legs of quarterback Fidel Venegas, who had close to 50 yards rushing during the drive. Jaidyn Guyton capped the drive with a 3-yard run with 7:35 left in the half.

Shiner quickly retook the lead with a 57-yard drive in six plays with Brooks scoring from the Flatonia 29 with the point after no good, leaving Shiner ahead 13-7.
The Comanches pressured Venegas on the next drive: he had to scramble for 6 on the first play of the drive and on the second play, he was in the grasps of a couple of Shiner defender when somehow he managed to get the ball airborne but into the hands Shiner defensive back Carson Schutte at the Flatonia 43.
Brooks scored from the 38 on the second play and scored on the two-point run for a 21-7 Shiner lead with less than two and half minutes left into halftime.
Venegas led the Bulldogs inside the 20 late in the quarter and was picked off by Schuette in the end zone to pretty much end the half.
The 'Dogs went three and out on their first drive of second half; Shiner had the ball at their own 34 when the lightning rolled in and the game was delayed for over an hour.
After play resumed, Brooks capped a Shiner drive with a 7-yard run and had another two-point run to put the Comanches ahead 29-7 with under five minutes left in the third.
Flatonia reached the Shiner 49 on the next drive but turned it over on downs. Brooks had a 24-yard run on the first play and later ended the drive with 4-yard run. Ryan Peterson hit tight end Keenan Hailey for the two-point conversion to push the Comanche lead to 37-7.
Flatonia failed again to convert a fourth down on the next drive at their own 49. Beck Bishop had a 32-yard run to the 17 and he and Trace Bishop ran the football until Beck Bishop's 3-yard run with 2:06 left in the game. Trace Bishop successfully converted the two-point run.
The Comanches will now play Refugio for in the regional final for the second straight year and the fifth straight year to meet in the playoffs.
The Comanches and Bobcats also played in the regular-season district game with Refugio taking a 38-27 win to prevent a third straight loss to the Comanches.
The Refugio game is set for 7 p.m. Friday [ December 2, 2022 ] at Rattler Stadium in San Marcos.
