TOMBALL - The Shiner Comanches had to grind out the ball on the ground and make some key defensive stops but got the job done in a 35-28 win over Timpson Thursday night in the state semifinals at Tomball ISD Stadium.

The Comanches (15-0) play in their second straight 2ADI state championship; they were scheduled to play Hawley on Dec.15 at 7 p.m.

"It's a great feeling; we fought until the end," junior quarterback-defensive back Drew Wenske said.

Unlike a lot of their games this season, the Shiner offense, notably running backs Doug and Dalton Brooks did not rip off too many long runs but did have a couple of carries 20 yards or more: Doug Brooks had a 32-yard touchdown run and had another gain of 24 while Dalton Brooks had second-half carries of 58 and 20 yards. On the ground, Shiner ran for 409 yards led by Dalton Brooks who had 237 and one touchdown. Doug Brooks added 126 yards and three scores.

Wenske was 4-for-4 passing for 56 yards and one touchdown while running three times for 46 yards.

"Our running backs ran hard and the offensive line did their job," Wenske said.

"We knew long drives would be key for us as Timpson's offense is hard to stop," Boedeker said.

The Timpson Bears offense did manage some big plays, led by dual-threat quarterback Terry Bussey who ran for a touchdown and returned a kickoff for touchdown while throwing for 104 yards.

The Comanche defense got a couple of big stops and made two clutch interceptions near the end of each half, including a pick by Dalton Brooks late in the fourth quarter as Timpson was driving for a potential gametying score.

"Our defense was amazing. We held them in check. We were a little shakey at times," Wenske said.

"We were definitely trying to get lots of pressure on Bussey. He is very dangerous and managed to get away from us at times," Boedeker said. "I thought our kids on defense played very hard. Dalton's interception was huge."

The Comanches opened the contest with a lengthy 18-play, 79-yard drive that swallowed over seven and half minutes of clock. Shiner was content to pick up 4-6 yards at a time with Doug Brooks and Dalton Brooks. Dalton Brooks had early-drive carries of 15, 12 and 11 yards in which the latter converted a third down. After being pushed back to the Bear 10 on a false-start, Wenske hit tight end Tyler Bishop for a touchdown pass and the 7-0 lead at the 4:06 mark.

The Bears tied the game marching 58 yards in 10 plays with Bussey making plays through the air. He and receiver Voskey Howard connected twice for 25 yards and Howard capped the drive with a 14-yard sweep.

Shiner appeared to stall close to the 50 on its next drive before Wenske had completions of 16 yards to Bishop and 20 to Eli Fric. Doug Brooks capped the shorter drive (11 plays) with a 7-yard run for a 14-7 Shiner lead.

A fumbled snap on the next Bear possession resulted in the game's first punt and Shiner took over at the 45, scoring in three plays on a 32-yard run by Doug Brooks.

Timpson got close to scoring on the next drive as Bussey had a big completion to Howard for 33 yards to the 17 and the Bears got down to the 10. However, Timpson was unable to capitalize as Jace Moeller came up with a big interception for Shiner, allowing the Comanches to run out the clock to take a 21-7 lead at halftime.

To start the second half, Timpson got to its 39 before Bussey was stopped for no gain on fourth down at his 39. Shiner's run game was held in check and they found themselves with fourth down at the 38.

Wenske found Bishop for 10 to the 28 and then Wenske scrambled for 26 to the 2 where Dalton Brooks punched it in for a 28-7 Comanche lead.

Timpson then grabbed the momentum as Bussey fielded the kickoff in his own end zone and raced the distance to get his team within 28-14.

The Bears stopped Shiner at the Timpson 16 and then went 84 yards in 12 plays, capped by a 1-yard run by Braden Courtney.

Dalton Brooks's key 58-yard run from his 41 to the Bear 1 came on third down to keep the drive going and Doug Brooks scored from the 1 to put Shiner ahead 35-21 with 6:48 left. Timpson gained steam with a kickoff return to the Shiner 40 and Bussey scored on a 40-yard run.

Timpson came up a big with a fumble recovery at their own 22 on the next drive and got close to the 50, but Shiner effectively sealed the win as Bussey was pressured and was intercepted by Dalton Brooks with a minute or so left.
