SAN ANTONIO - Drew Wenske had two first-quarter interceptions for touchdowns and also threw for two scores in the first half as Shiner scored 42 first-quarter points and rolled to a 76-6 win over Harper in the bi-district round Thursday night at Comal Davenport High School.

Shiner totaled 509 yards of total offense and limited Harper to just 121 yards and one score.

"Every playoff win is a big one. It's a new season for us and we have to take it one game at a time. Still trying to improve each week on little things," Comanches head coach Daniel Boedeker said. "Our kids are very excited about the playoffs and we have to continue that same approach. We did a good job of not having excessive penalties; I wanted us to clean that up before the playoffs because playoff games get bigger and those penalties can hurt you."

In addition to Wenske's two pick-sixs, Shiner recovered two fumbles and forced seven punts.

"Those interceptions for huge for Drew, he's been a playmaker in the secondary for us all year; the defensive line did good against the run game, linebackers played well downhill and we got pressure on the quarterback," Boedeker said.

With the score, the younger players got to see plenty of action, starting late in the second quarter.

"Proud of those guys. We told them to practice hard and we brought them up to varsity for a reason so they would continue to get work and varsity experience because that will help them down the road," he said.

Wenske's first pick-six came a minute into the game, on the second play of the game, a 30-yard return. The Longhorns picked up a first down on their next drive on third down with a 26-yard pass from Braden Strickland to Bryson Lake but the drive eventually stalled out and Harper punted.

Wenske threw on Shiner's first offensive play from their 27 but it fell incomplete. Dalton Brooks then ripped off a 50-yard run to the 23. Doug Brooks then had an 8-yard gain, and Dalton carried for 7 and 8 yards, with the 8-yarder being a short touchdown run to put Shiner ahead 14-0 with 7:16 left in the quarter. The Comanches forced another punt and Wenske found Eli Fric who made an one-handed catch for a 61-yard touchdown catch.

The Comanches had some tackles for loss on the next Harper drive and Shiner started at its 49. Wenske found Tyler Bishop for a 27-yard pass to the 24 of Harper and Shiner was sent back to the 39 on a penalty after the play. Beck Bishop scored on a 39-yard run on the next play.

Wenske had a 36-yard interception return on the next drive for a 35-0 Shiner lead and Shiner scored once more in the quarter on a 69-yard run by Doug Brooks with 27 seconds left. A minute and half into the second frame, Wenske and Fric combined for another 61-yard touchdown strike.

After another Comanche defensive stop, Dalton Brooks returned a punt to the Harper 16. Cale Shows had a 12-yard touchdown run on the second play.

Harper fumbled away the kickoff at their own 24 and Trace Bishop scored on the first play. The Comanches went ahead 70-0 with 17 seconds left after a 70-yard drive by the secondstring offense, capped by a 25-yard run by Trace Bishop.

Even though Shiner kicked off to start the game, the Comanches graciously let Harper receive the second-half kickoff.

Harper drove 72 yards in 11 plays with a 4-yard run by Jack Helfrich with 5:01 left in the third quarter. Due to the running clock, Shiner re ceived the ball with under three minutes left in the quarter.

They used the last couple of minutes of the third quarter and literally the entire fourth frame to drive 69 yards in 15 plays led by freshman quarterback Carson Schuette, Trace Bishop and Shows. Schuette capped the drive with a 4-yard quarterback sneak with no time left on the clock (and no point after).
