PFLUGERVILLE — No sense in beating around the bush: Shiner was just flat out dominating.

The Comanches scored a big 56-0 doughnut win in the regional semifinals over playoff rival Mason that ended a three-game win streak for the Punchers Friday night ( November 27, 2020 ) at Pflugerville’s PField

“I was proud of our effort. They brought a lot of energy. We knew this was going to be a good opponent for us,” Shiner head coach Daniel Boedeker said. “Defensively, we played outstanding. Our guys battled; we talked about their backs, how physical their quarterback was and we did a good job of tackling. Had a few we missed here and there but the effort was great.”

Comanches could not be slowed down by Mason in any way as they rushed for nearly 450 yards and added 55 passing yards.

“Our offense came out explosive and did a great job against a really good defense,” Boedeker said. “We did good on special teams; just did well on all three areas. Guys took a lot of pride in their work this week. A little different week with Thanksgiving and not having school but the kids handled it well and got a good result.”

The Punchers could not land any kind of offensive punch against a suffocating Shiner defense that yielded under 150 yards and just seven first downs; Mason punted seven times; Shiner got a turnover.

“We stopped Mason when we needed to, the defense just performed out of our minds,” said linebacker Christian Wagner.

“I think we came out and did exactly what we thought we were going to do,” defensive back Trevor Haynes said. Haynes got an interception on the play following a pass interference call against him. He also ran for 52 yards and one touchdown. “They called me for pass interference earlier; I got a fumble strip but they called it down and then I got the interception.”

Shiner took the opening kickoff and marched 65 yards in less than 2 minutes with a 29-yard run by Zane Rhodes on the first play and Tyler Palmer capping off with a 15-yard run.

Mason punted on its first series after a penalty wiped out an early first-down run. Palmer ran for 5 from the Puncher 49 to the 44 and he then hit Tyler Bishop with a 44-yard touchdown pass for a 14-0 lead.

On Shiner’s next series, Dalton Brooks ripped off a 78-yard run on the second play following a holding call against the Comanches on the first play. Shiner’s next drive was a little more methodical, a nine-play 62-yard drive in over four minutes, getting Dalton Brooks’s second score, a 44-yard end-around.

Shiner went ahead 35-0 with 3:43 left in the first half on a 28-yard run by Doug Brooks to finish a 60-yard march.

Shiner got the ball back with a 1:23 left but a holding call and a sack by Mason prevented Shiner from adding another score and it was 35-0 at halftime.

Mason’s first drive of the second half was hardly different than their first of the first half but this time they tried to convert a 4th-and-1 play at their 34 with no luck.

Shiner quickly took advantage with a 20- yard run by Palmer with 8:21 left in the third. Mason got a couple of first downs, including one via penalty on its next drive but that is when Haynes stepped in with his interception and he was the conclusion to the ensuing drive with his touchdown run at the 2:34 mark of the third.

In the fourth quarter, Shiner’s second-string offense got a shot and finished a 48-yard drive with a 3-yard run by Devondrick Mathis.

Shiner will continue their 2020 playoff run when they meet Refugio in the State Quarterfinals this Friday, December 4 at 1:00pm in The Alamodome in San Antonio.
