It’s a week of postseason rematches for the Shiner and St. Paul football teams. The Shiner Comanches take on Hearne in the area playoff round while the Shiner St. Paul Cardinals play Dallas Covenant in the regional round.
SHINER COMANCHES AT REFUGIO BOBCATS
It will be a colossal matchup for the No. 2 Shiner Comanches as they play the No. 1 Refugio Bobcats in the regional final at 7:30 p.m. Friday at D.W. Rutledge Stadium at Judson High School in Converse. Shiner will be the VISITORS for this contest.
Refugio has plenty of players back from their 2018 team in which they reached the state quarterfinals. “They carry eight seniors on offense and return seven starters,” Shiner head coach Daniel Boedeker said. “On the defensive side, the did lose some players but have five seniors playing defense.”
Refugio runs a spread offense that is balanced and will be led by running back Ysidio Mascorro, quarterback Austin Ochoa, wide receiver/quarterback Jordan Kelley and lineman Daeron Willis.
Boedeker said the key is stop the Bobcats from converting third or fourth downs. “We have to stop the Refugio offense on third down and get them off the field,” he said. “They were able to convert some of those in last year’s game. We have to tackle well, swarm the football and prevent big plays.”
Mascorro at linebacker, Willis on the interior line and Ochoa at end will anchor the Refugio defense. “Their defensive line is not as big as they have been still have size and the defense overall has lots of speed,” Boedeker said.
“Our offensive line will need to control the line of scrimmage and have a big challenge ahead of them. There will be times when Refugio’s defense will get the better of us. We will just need to move on to the next play.”
