SEALY -- The Shiner Comanches kept the Hearne Eagles on the ground.

The Comanche defense held Hearne to just a handful of completed passes for under 90 yards and limited their ground game to 31 yards in a 55-0 win Friday night ( November 22, 2019 ) at Sealy’s TJ Miller Field.

Shiner put pressure on Hearne quarterback Micah Smith and picked him off four times.

“We challenged our defense to play really fast in this game and get to the football,” Comanches head coach Daniel Boedeker said. “The Eagle players were going to be hard to tackle in space and our defenders exceeded expectations. Our defensive line and linebackers did great by getting some pressure on Smith. Our secondary did a great job as Hearne can be tough to cover.”

The offense did their part with over 500 yards on the ground led by 205 yards and five touchdowns by running back Donyai Taylor.

“I think we came out here really explosive,” Taylor said. “The line did excellent today.”

“We did well on the offensive line. Have to keep our eyes up and stay on our blocks. That was a good defensive line we faced,” Boedeker said.

Shiner did have some penalty and ball security issues (three turnovers) that they will work to correct.

The Comanches took the opening kickoff to their 21 and Doug Brooks busted a 61-yard run on the first play from scrimmage. Taylor then had a 9-yard carry to the 9 and Hearne was called for a facemask, placing the ball at the 4 where Taylor scored on the next play.

Smith found Jalen Gonzales for a 37-yard gain to the Shiner 37 on the second play of the following drive. But the Eagles were driven back to their own 47 and punted. Starting from their 14, Taylor had an 18-yard gain on the first play and later finished the drive with a 49-yard run at the 6:36 mark for a 14-0 lead.

The Eagles lost a fumble at their own 22 on the next possession. Zane Rhodes had a 10-yard carry to the 12 and Tyler Palmer scored on a sneak a few plays later for a 21-0 Shiner advantage.

After a Hearne punt, the teams traded interceptions with Christian Wagner getting one for Shiner; Taylor capped a 58-yard drive with an 18-yard run seven seconds into the second period. Trevor Haynes got 24 yards on the first two carries.

The Eagles were stopped on fourth down at their own 48 but Shiner fumbled a few plays later. The Comanches got the ball back on an interception by Devin Lehnert and the end result was a 4-yard run by Taylor at the 4:27 mark of the second quarter.

Hearne had to punt again but was able to intercept another Comanche pass but the drive ended when the first half clock ran out.

On the second half kickoff, Hearne was stuck at its 3 and got to it 15 before a short punt to the 30.

Taylor was at it again with a 30-yard run and 42-0 Shiner lead with 9:50 left in the quarter.

On its next offensive series, Shiner had to punt but got the ball back in its own half on a Dalton Brooks pick.

Rhodes had a 38-yard run from his 37 to the Eagles 25 followed by a 20-yard run by Haynes to the 5 and Palmer later scored on a 2-yard run. Dalton Brooks finished up the scoring with a 4-yard run at the 8:07 left in the game with the attempted two-point play no good.
