The Shiner Comanches open the playoffs tonight in Floresville against Freer. The Shiner St. Paul Cardinals have a first-round playoff bye.
FREER BUCKAROOS vs. SHINER COMANCHES
The Shiner Comanches, District 15-2A-D1 champions, open the playoffs against the Freer Buckaroos (fourth place in 16-2A-DI) at Floresville High School at 7 p.m. today (Thursday, November 14, 2019).
Freer is 5-5 and 2-3 in district; they score 28.8 points a game and yield 33.5 points a contest.
Comanches head coach Daniel Boedeker said Freer’s offensive runs the spread out of the shotgun.
“They will run the power game when in two-back formations and when they get in one back, they will throw,” he said.
The Buckaroos have 2,306 yards on the ground (230.6 a game), led by Hondo Beirstedt (128-794, seven touchdowns, 79.4 yards a game) and Lonnie Adams (94-545, four touchdowns, 60.6 yards a game).
Elliot Ramirez (66-405, five touchdowns) and Jaime Perez (58-317, three touchdowns) also lend considerable support. Freer averages 105 yards passing a game with Beirstedt going 73-of-148 for 813 yards, 14 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. Ramirez is the top receiver with 16 catches for 227 yards and four touchdowns.
“They rotate two quarterbacks in Beirstedt and Ramirez; one is the better thrower and the other is a faster runner. They both run the ball well. Our defense will have to be ready to defend these dual- threat quarterbacks,” Boedeker said.
The Buckaroos have good size on both offensive and defensive lines. “We will have to have good pad level on our lines,” Boedeker said.
Freer’s defense lines up in the 4-3 and has a trio of very solid linebackers. Freer will bring the pressure via the blitz.
“We will have to really control the line of scrimmage and keep our eyes up for their blitzing,” Boedeker said.
Freer's top defender is Ivan Aguillion with 60 total tackles.
