The Shiner Comanches dropped the curtain on their non-district season with a 63-21 win over Lexington Friday night at Comanche Stadium.

“The kids gave us great effort. It was a grind going through these bigger schools. We played fast and physical in each game,” Shiner head coach Daniel Boedeker said. “We are happy with the performance but not satisfied. There are a lot of things we can clean up.”

Shiner scored three touchdowns in each frame, established a 42-0 halftime lead and was ahead 63-0 after three quarters.

The Comanches got on the board quickly with a three-play 68 yard drive and a 57-yard run by Donyai Taylor for 7-0 less than 90 seconds into the game.

Shiner got inside the Eagles 40 on their next possession but fumbled the ball away. Lexington lost 8 yards on three plays and punted to the Shiner 45 with Devin Lehnert returning it to the Eagles 27. Zane Rhodes scored on a toss for 27 yards for a 14-0 lead at the 4:41 mark.

The Eagles got all the way to the Shiner 45 before having to punt and got off just a 12-yard kick to the Shiner 33.

Quarterback Palmer followed his line on a sneak and found running room for a 67-yard touchdown run with 51 seconds left in the quarter.

Lexington went three and out, and Shiner started at its own 42. Palmer scrambled for 20 yards to the Eagle 38. A few plays later, a negative-rush play put Comanches on a third down for the 46. Palmer hit Doug Brooks on a screen pass for 44 and Brooks later finished the drive with a 1-yard run with 8:03 left in the second quarter.

Shiner’s next drive started at the Lexington 48. Rhode had carries of 13 and 33 to the 2 and Trevor Haynes plunged in for a 35-0 Comanche advantage.

Shiner scored once more before halftime with Taylor taking an option pitch and going 42 yards to pay dirt to give Shiner a 42-0 lead.

Early in the third quarter, Shiner recovered a fumble at Lexington 28.

They went backwards on a 5-yard false start and on the next play, Palmer found Cross Rankin for a 33-yard strike with 11:11 left in the third.

Next Shiner drive started at their 41 and Dalton Brooks took a toss for 43 yards to the 16. Palmer and Rankin teamed up several plays later on a 13-yard pass. Lexington made some connections in the passing game to get near the Shiner 30 on the next drive. A pass closer to the end zone was intercepted by defensive back Jacquis Miller at the 4 and he went 96 yards for a defensive score for Shiner.

Lexington saved a little face in the final quarter — quarterback Sheldron Spranger had a 5-yard run at the 11:54 mark and had a 17-yard touchdown pass to Coby Robertson.

Aaron Allert’s 18-yard run with less than a minute to play to get the Eagles to within 63-21.
