Shiner Comanches vs. Hallettsville Brahmas

Shiner will start the 2018 season by welcoming Lavaca County neighbors Hallettsville to Comanche Stadium at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow ( Friday, August 31, 2018 ).

The Division 3A-D-I Brahmas were 9-2 (5-1 district) in 2017 with 14 letterman and 10 starters back.

“Hallettsville does not have their usual numbers but they are still fundamentally sound,” Comanches head coach Steven Cerny said.

The Brahmas have an explosive running back in Jonathan Brooks to lead their spread offense.

“He is like former Brahmas running back Scooter Adams,” Cerny said.

Trace Jordan or Rhett Trileck could take snaps for Hallettsville and the receiver corp includes Lane Linhart and Jayce Bludau.

“Our defense has to contain Brooks because he can score at any moment,” Cerny said. “We have to take away their big plays, run or pass, and have to make them march the ball.”

Strong side linebacker Bludau will lead the Brahmas defense along with linebacker Reid Henke, lineman Hunter Flanagan and lineman Josh Koppenol.

“We hope to use our size on the offensive line and our depth at skilled positions to our advantage,” Cerny said. “We do not have to be one dimensional in our offensive plan.”
