After being held in check in the first half, Shiner came out with fire in the second.

The Comanches scored 18 unanswered points in the second half to power past Yorktown, 24-7, Friday night ( October 27, 2017 ) at Comanche Stadium.

“It was everything we thought it would be,” Cerny said. “Yorktown came out physical. They had a good scheme defensively. We had some opportunities early but I thought we did not stay on our blocks long enough.”

Trailing 7-6 at the break, Shiner came out of the locker room and scored on its first two drives of the third quarter and then got a special-teams score early in the fourth frame.

“I was very proud the way we came out in the second half. Our defense played exceptionally well save for one breakdown,”

Cerny said. The Wildcats were held to just 7 yards on their first possession and the punt gave Shiner the ball inside Yorktown territory at the 47. Collin Bujnoch, Donyai Taylor and Tyler Mikes took turns running the ball combined with an end-around from Cole Jalufka until Bujnoch scored from the 3 on a fourth-and-goal to finish a 13-play drive that lasted over six minutes. The extra point was wide and Shiner led 6-0.

The Comanches’ next drive ended at the ‘Cat 25 on an incomplete pass and the next couple of drives concluded with each team failing to convert a fourth down.

Yorktown later drive 72 yards in nine plays; quarterback Jayden Webb ran 8 yards on the read option to convert a third down. He later had an 8-yard pass to Ja-Mel Wade and capped the drive with a 41-yard long pass to Ethan Queen to give the visitors a 7-6 lead with 53 seconds left in the half.

The Comanches started the second half with a kickoff return to close to midfield at their own 46. Taylor converted a fourth-and-1 play with a 3-yard gain. At the ‘Cat 44, Shiner faced third-and- 11; Mikes completed a 13-yard pass to Cole Jalufka and 15 yards were added after a personal foul on Yorktown moved the ball to the 16. Taylor had a 12-yard run to the 4 and scored on the next play to give Shiner a 12-7 lead with 7:25 left in the third.

The following Yorktown drive birthed a turnover as Dustin Petras picked off Webb. Lane Nevlud had an 11- yard run from the Yorktown 47 to 36. Taylor had a 6-yard gain and Nevlud followed with an 18-yard rush to the 12. Nevlud capped the drive with a 5-yard run with just over three minutes left in the third.

Nevlud helped Shiner pad the lead on the following drive as the Comanche defense did not allow Yorktown to get past the ‘Cat 35. The ‘Cat punt was blocked and Nevlud gathered the ball around the 27 and ran it back for a specialteams touchdown for a 24-7 Shiner lead.

Yorktown failed to produce points on its last two drives. Shiner gained possession with 1:43 left in the game and ran out the clock.

Shiner will host Ganado at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow ( Friday, November 3, 2017 ) in its final regular season home game and travels to Refugio on Nov. 10.

“It’s gets bigger each week. We have to take care of Ganado (later this week) and have a district showdown with Refugio (next week),” Cerny said.
