Shiner Comanche Football The Shiner Comanches and Shiner St. Paul Cardinals will play their first regular-season games this week after weather conditions resulted in the scheduled season openers being canceled.

Hallettsville Brahmas at Shiner Comanches

The Comanches were able to scrimmage on Friday ( August 31, 2017 ) in Luling, making up for their scheduled August 24 scrimmage that had been called off.

“We came out of that scrimmage pretty healthy. We had one player who did not participate,” Shiner head coach Steven Cerny said. “We did well with our conditioning and held up well. There was lots of positives for our team and kids played great.” Cerny commended his athletes on handling an unusual start to the season with the weather conditions and off days.

Now, the Comanches will host neighbors rival Hallettsville Brahmas at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow ( Friday, September 8, 2017 ) at Comanche Stadium. The Brahmas’ season opener with Schulenburg was canceled and later arranged into a scrimmage.

Hallettsville is 13-1 and their only lost in 2016 came in the state quarterfinals to district rival Yoakum. They return 16 lettermen, seven offense and seven defensive starters.

Running back Scooter Adams (2,031 total yards, 32 touchdowns) and quarterback D.J. Taylor (2,680 passing yards, 30 touchdowns) will lead Hallettsville’s offense. Cerny said overall Hallettsville has a lot of speed on the team.

“They have lots of fast skilled position players that we will need to contain,” he said. “They have athletes that will be better than some of those we will face in our district.” The main playmakers on the Brahma defense will be linebacker Jaxon Reeves (163 tackles), linebacker Reid Henke, Adams at defensive back, defensive back Jackson Taylor and lineman Cullen Mikes.

Cerny said Shiner likely will not be able to pop a big play on the Brahmas. “We will have to play ball control. We will have to move the chains, three or four yards at a time. We cannot make mistakes or penalties,” he said.

In last year’s game, the Brahmas came away with the 35-21 victory.
