The Shiner softball team is off to another regional finals as they swept Riveria Kaufer 11-1 and 15-4 in regional semifinals round Thursday and Saturday, May 18 and 20, 2017.

SHINER STARTS ROLLING IN SECOND INNING IN 11-1 OPENING-GAME VICTORY

Once the Lady Comanches got going on a roll, it is tough to stop them.

And that includes a extremely breezy day/ evening.

After a scoreless first inning in Game 1 of the regional semifinals against Riveria Kaufer Thursday evening in Sinton, Shiner took advantage of some Lady Seahawks miscues, got a hit and brought in a run in the top of the second inning.

From there things snowballed as Shiner gathered nine total hits while Kaufer had about five errors and the Lady Comanches took the opening game of the series 11-1.

“Once we got a couple of key hits, we just kept following up on them,” Shiner head coach Steven Cerny said. “I think it was that second inning where they made an error and we got a hit. It broke the ice for us. Sometimes, it takes something very simple to get you going and everybody relaxed after that.”

The coastal winds made things difficult for both teams but Shiner found a way to overcome. “This was a tough day to play on with the wind blowing like it did,” Cerny said. “It’s tough on the defense, tough on the pitcher, tough on the hitters. I thought we stayed focused.”

Bethany Nevlud took the win for Shiner despite being a little under the weather. She had one run, two hits, four walks and seven strikeouts in six innings worked. Lauren Haas threw for Lauren Haas threw for the last inning with one walk and one strikeout.

“I think we stepped up to the plate when we needed to,” Nevlud said. “Every one of else had a clutch hit or came up with a walk or some kind of defensive play. I felt confident in the circle. The wind is definitely a disadvantage when your pitching. I just had to stay within myself and do all I could for my team.

Haas started things in the second as she took first after being hit, stole second, went to third on the error on Taylor Wenske’s ball and then stole home for a 1-0 Shiner lead.

In the third inning, Kassidy Bishop reached on an error and eventually scored on a passed ball; Mackinly Pilat got a hit and later got home as Nevlud was out on a groundout to shortstop. In the fourth inning, Lauren Schuette got a leadoff double, moved to third on the Madison Jalufka sacrifice and scored on the Taylor Wenske single down the first-base line.

In the bottom of the fourth, Kaufer took advantage of a Lady Comanche error and got a hit, managing to bring in one run.

In the fifth, Pilat got on via the error, Kailey Williams got a oneout walk and Schuette reached on the fielder’s choice to load the bases. With two outs and bases loaded, Haas doubled in Pilat and Williams, and Shiner led 8-1.

“In practice we work on these types of situations and coach preaches that we need to do our job when our turn comes up. At the plate, you sit back and stroke the bat,” Haas said. “We got in a groove because once one person starts hitting, it’s contagious and we all start hitting.”

In the sixth, Cameron Cowan got a leadoff walk; Bishop and Pilat singled. Nelvud was walked to score Cowan; Williams advanced Bishop home on the sacrifice fly.

In the seventh, Haas got a leadoff walk and scored on Wenske’s hit. Pilat reached on the error and Wenske scored. Shiner added one more run as Pilat went home on the RBI double by Nevlud.

For Shiner on the offensive side, Pilat was 2-for-4, three runs and Wenske hit 2-for-4, two RBI and run; Bishop batted 1-for-4 with two runs; Nevlud finished 1-for-4, double and three RBI; Schuette was 1-for-4, run and double; Haas was 1-for-2, two runs, double and two RBI. Cowan finished 1-for-4 with one run and Williams added an RBI and a run.
