The game for the District 15-2A Division 1 title did not go the way Shiner had hoped but the Comanches still put forth great effort against a tough, fast, big and very physical Refugio.

The Bobcats claimed the title by blanking Shiner 35-0 Friday night ( November 4, 2016 ) at Comanche Stadium.

"It did not come out as we expected but obviously Refugio has a good football team," Shiner head coach Steven Cerny said. "They just whipped us physically on both sides of the football."

"Our kids played very hard but there is little you can do when you're 185 and go up against players who are 270. We were not able to use our quickness but Refugio was pretty quick too.

Cerny said he was happy with the effort of the Comanches despite the end result against Refugio.

"I will never get down on our kids when they played hard," he said. "I am proud of each and every one of them."

Refugio took the opening drive 43 yards from their 39 to the Shiner 18 but stalled out and missed a 35-yard field goal. The Comanches managed to get near the 50 but eventually had to punt, pinning the Bobcats at their 7 with a 45-yard kick.

Refugio drove the distance with runs by Jaylon and Ysidrio Mascorro along with a 17-yard pass from quarterback Jacobe Avery to Robert Ortiz. Ysidrio Mascorro capped the drive with a 6-yard run with 11:38 left in the second quarter.

After a three-and-out, Shiner had a short punt of 23 yards, giving Refugio pretty good field position at the Comanche 48.

The 'Cats went 48 yards in just six plays —- Jaylon Mascorro had runs of 23 and 14 yards to help set up Avery's 14-yard pass to Ortiz with 7:20 left in the half.

Refugio went up 21-0 as Ortiz picked off Brandon Cerny on the first play of the next drive and it was a quick 60-yard drive in four plays with a 26-yard run by Jaylon Mascorro with just over five minutes left in the half.

On Refugio's next offensive possession, they fumbled the ball and Shiner recovered. The Comanches were unable to get points off the turnover D'Mond La- Fond picked off Brandon Cerny a couple of plays later to effectively end the half.

Shiner took nearly half the third quarter with its first drive of the second half. Dadrian Taylor, Brandon Cerny and Collin Bujnoch carried the ball while Brandon Cerny hit Ty Boedeker for two catches to total 14 yards.

Later, Brandon Cerny found Jordan Malinovsky on fourth down for a few yards but Refugio stripped and recovered the ball at their 36 to end the drive. Three plays later, Jaylon Mascorro had a 65-yard run for a 28-0 lead with 3:52 left in the third.

In the fourth quarter, Refugion drove 97 yards to cap scoring after overcoming 25 yards in penalties on the march —- Jaylon Mascorro had a 39-yard run and later polished the drive off with an 11-yard run.

Shiner has a quick turnaround as it will host Three Rivers at 7 p.m. today ( Thursday, November 10, 2016 ) at Comanche Stadium in the Class 2A Division 1 bi-district playoff game.

"We're going to have to get over this one quickly," Steven Cerny said. "We have to figure out what we have to do to be a better team."
