Shiner and Refugio fans packed Comanche Stadium Friday night (October 9, 2015) to witness what Coach Steve Cerny called, "no doubt, one of the biggest wins for Shiner in a district ball game in a long time."

The second ranked Comanches were taking on the fifth ranked Refugio Bobcats in just their second match-up in school history, the first to ever be played in Shiner’s home stadium. Refugio won last year’s contest and came into the game with 49-game long district winning streak that stretched back since 2006.

The Comanches snapped that streak and took 30-19 victory over their most likely rivals for the District 15-2A championship.

Refugio put the first points on the board in the first quarter with a touchdown pass. Even with their quick block of Refugio’s extra point kick and a field goal from Chad Neubauer, the Comanches trailed 6-3 at the end of the first quarter, their first deficit of the season.

Refugio held onto that lead until the tail end of the second quarter when Shiner pushed their first touchdown across the goal line with a short carry by Brandon Cerny up the middle. That score along with the successful extra point kick by Chad Neubauer sent the Comanches into halftime with a 10-6 lead.

The first minute of the second half really turned the tide for Shiner. They scored another touchdown on their second play of the half on a rushing play from Dadrian Taylor. On Refugio’s very next drive, Charles Haynes intercepted the pass and ran it back 47 yards for another quick Comanche touchdown.

Haynes, who had two crucial interceptions on the night and returned them for 79 total yards, said of the plays, "I don’t know how to explain it. It was just so great. I saw the ball coming and I took it. Nobody could stop me. I was just getting really good reads, and Coach Turek called it well. It feels amazing. We feel unstoppable out there."

Coach Cerny added, "We knew at halftime that we had to try to control the clock and play our game. We had those two quick scores, one offensively and one defensively. I think that’s where the game really turned around and swung our way."

The middle of the third quarter was turnover- ridden on both sides, Shiner’s two interceptions from Haynes and Taylor matching their two fumbles on offense. However, the Comanches continued to hold the Bobcats out of the end zone and added one more touchdown of their own on a Cerny run with just 10 seconds left in the third quarter.

Refugio put up two touchdowns in the final quarter while Shiner remained scoreless. However, it was not enough on the Bobcat’s part to seriously threaten the Comanches’ 30-19 victory.

Shiner ran for 262 total yards during the game. Although it was a slow passing night for the Comanches, quarterback Brandon Cerny more than made up for it on the ground, leading the team with 119 yards on 19 carries. Taylor added 93 yards and Neubauer ran for 38.

Coach Cerny said, "I’m just so proud of these guys, every one of them. We were exhausted out there and kept making plays. You gotta make big plays to win big games and gosh, Charles Haynes, Dadrian Taylor, Brandon Cerny, Chad Neubauer, our whole offensive line. You can’t leave one single person out. It was a great team effort."

The Comanches, now 6-0 on the season and 1-0 in district, will continue district play at home this Friday (October 16, 2015) against the Ganado Indians. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.
