The state championship was the fifth for the Lady Comanches and tied Weimar for the most state titles in UIL history. The state title was the first since 2011.
Freshman third baseman Bethany Nevlud was named the championship game MVP. Nevlud homered, singled and scored two runs. CeCe Darilek led the defense from the mound and gave up just three hits over the course of the game. Darilek pitched around four walks to keep the shutout intact.
Shiner committed just two errors during two full games of state tournament action and successfully executed one tight play after another, including three double plays in the championship game.
Darilek got out of a bases loaded, one-out situation unscathed in the first inning.
The Lady Comanches picked up the initial run of the game in the second inning. Nevlud fell behind 0-2 but worked the count to 3-2 before hitting a single to left field. Nevlud moved up two bases after a Lauren Schuette bunt was misplayed for an error and scored on a sacrifice fly by Cassidy Bishop.
For five full innings, that was the only run to cross the plate for either team. That changed in the bottom of the sixth, however, when Bethany Nevlud hit a 1-1 pitch and sent one sailing over the high left field fence for a solo home run.
Shiner sent one more run across the plate for a little extra insurance in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly from Kori Landman that scored Bishop. Bishop had singled to open the inning.
With a 3-run lead on the board, the Comanche defense powered through their final three outs of the game.
Darilek retired the Lady Cats 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh to clinch the title, and began their well-deserved celebration, first on the field and eventually on top of the fire truck in the traditional victory lap through Shiner later that night.
Along with Nevlud, Darilek, Bishop, Schuette, and Kailey Williams were all named to the 2A softball state all-tournament team, as selected by the media. The state champion Lady Comanches finished their season with a record of 31-5-1.
Congratulations to the players, coaches, managers, and all their families and fans on an incredible season.
Kailey Williams provided strong defense for Shiner at shortstop throughout the tournament and earned a spot on the Class 2A All-Tournament team.

STATE SEMIFINAL - SHINER 5, HAWLEY 4
A three-run rally in the top of the seventh catapulted the Lady Comanches to a 5-4 win over the Hawley Bearcats in one of their most thrilling games of the season in the semifinals Wednesday afternoon [ June 3, 2015 ].
After a scoreless first inning, Shiner drew first blood in the top of the second with a run from Kailey Williams on a sacrifice fly from Hannah Nevlud.
Unfortunately, that lead did not last very long. Hawley scored two runs on RBI singles by Karlee Thompson and Marissa Hall to take the 2-1 lead.
The Lady Comanches offense racked up four hits over the next four innings innings and even loaded the bases in the fifth, but all of their efforts translated into just one run on the board when CeCe Darilek knocked in Hannah Nevlud after Nevlud’s leadoff triple in the fifth.
While the Hawley defense kept the dangerous Shiner bats mostly quiet, the Bearcat offense continued to grind away, adding two more runs in the fourth on three hits and a sacrifice fly.
At the beginning of the seventh inning, the Lady Comanches trailed 4-2 and it seemed like Shiner’s state tournament appearance might be destined for an early end.
However, the Shiner girls were apparently not quite ready to throw in the towel and head back to Lavaca County.
In their final opportunity at the plate, the Lady Comanches put together an offensive firestorm that earned them three quick runs, a state semifinals victory, and a spot in the finals on Thursday [ June 4, 2015 ].
With Lauren Schuette and Kassidy Bishop already on base, freshman Kailey Williams tied up the game in a single swing, hitting a two-run triple to right center. Kori Landman ensued with a sacrifice fly to score Williams with the winning run.
The Lady Comanche defense remained flawless in the bottom of the seventh to clinch the comeback victory.
Williams and Bethany Nevlud each hit 2 for 3, racking up four of the team’s nine hits in the game. CeCe Darilek pitched the win for the team, her 23rd of the season, with 6 hits, 1 walk, and 2 strike outs.
Darilek retired nine of the final 10 batters she faced to secure the victory.
Named to the 2015 Class 2A All-Tournament Team: CeCe Darilek,Jr.; Lauren Schuette, Soph.; Bethany Nevlud, Fr.; Kailey Williams, Fr.; Kassidy Bishop, Soph.
