The Shiner Comanches and the Ganado Indians met Friday night, in Ganado, with the Comanches winning the battle of the Indian tribes by defeating Ganado 35-7.

The first quarter of the contest ended up scoreless, with both offenses trying to figure out how the opposing defenses were aligned to stop them. Finally, with 8:12 in the second the Comanches dealt the first blow with running back Tyler Patek running 49 yards for the touchdown. The extra point attempt was no good and Shiner held a 6-0 lead over Ganado.

Ganado’s Garrett McCann returned the ensuing kickoff all the way down to the Comanche 27 yard line. Four plays later quarterback Jonathon Martinez scored from 7 yards out. The extra point attempt was good and Ganado now took a 7-6 lead with 7:00 left in the 2nd quarter.

Once again, the quick strike Shiner offense went to work at their own 19 yard line. Following a holding call against Shiner, quarterback Blake Michalec found a crease in the defensive line and ran 90 yards for a touchdown. Running back Chad Neubauer ran in the 2 point conversion and Shiner regained a 14-7 lead with 6:13 left in the 2nd quarter.

The Shiner defense then went to work. On the 4th play of Ganado’s next possession, the front 4 defensive linemen put Martinez under heavy pressure. Martinez’s pass downfield was intercepted by Shiner’s Ty Boedeker who returned the ball down to the Ganado 43 yard line. Two plays later, Blake Michalec scored from 36 yards out. The extra point attempt was good and Shiner now held a 21-7 lead with 3:00 left in the 2nd quarter, a lead which would be good going into halftime.

After some halftime adjustments, Shiner received the opening kickoff. Looking to set the tone, the Shiner offense scored on the first play of the 3rd quarter, with Tyler Patek running 73 yards for score. The extra point attempt was good and Shiner now enjoyed a 28-7 lead with 11:33 left in the 3rd quarter. The rest of the 3 quarter would be scoreless and Shiner kept the 28-7 lead going into the 4th quarter.

The Shiner offense would add one more score in the 4th quarter with Chad Neubauer scoring from 14 yards out with 9:46 left in the period. The extra point attempt was good and Shiner would hold the Ganado offense scoreless securing a 35-7 win over their district rivals.

Behind an offensive line, which opened many running lanes for the Shiner runners, the offense racked up 423 yards on the ground. Offensive linemen include: Micah Morkovsky, Marcus Rodriquez, Alex Bujnoch, Taylor Mraz, Dillon Kalina, Caleb Murrille and Ernie Egan.

Not to be outdone, the Shiner defense held the high powered Ganado under 100 total yards and only 7 points for the game. While all 11 players are crucial to the success of this unit, the front 4, which include Caleb Murrille, Ryan Panus, Marcus Rodriquez and Dillon Kalina were, and have been doing, a tremendous job of putting pressure on opposing offenses while keeping offensive linemen from blocking the defensive linebackers.

While the Comanches can count another win, it’s back to work on Monday preparing for another quality opponent in the Weimar Wildcats. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 at Comanche Stadium.
