WIMBERLEY -- Passing for two touchdowns and running for another, quarterback Garet Pustka led the Shiner Comanches to a 42-6 win over the Medina Bobcats in Class IA bi-district action in Wimberley.

Shiner will play Agua Dulce at Memorial Stadium in Victoria this Friday in the area playoff.

Pustka threw a 75-yard scoring strike to Devin Carroll in the second quarter and hit Eric Murphy with a 20-yard toss in the third period. Pustka also scored on a 1-yard run.

The Comanches rolled up 349 yards total yardage, while holding the Bobcats to only four first downs and 124 yards of offense.

"Everything seemed to click offensively," said Shiner Coach Billy Turek. "Pustka had a real good game and our running backs ran real well.

"Defensively we had a solid game with Flores having another good game at defensive end. Linebackers Ryan Spann and Chris Baer played real well and Jeremy Burchell did a good job at the tackle position," added Turek.

Medina had to punt nine times, lost two fumbles and incurred a number of critical penalties.

Eric Murphy opened up the scoring late in the first period on a 40-yard run. Bryan Franklin ran in the PAT and the Comanches were on the board, 8-0 with 1:08 left in the quarter.

The second period began on a defensive note with five changes in possession before Shiner found the scoring combination of Pustka to Murphy.

With 4:28 left in the half, Shiner got the ball on their 25-yard line and on the first play from scrimmage, Pustka dropped back and threw a floater to Devin Carroll who raced 75 yards down the left sideline for a touchdown. The try for two failed but Shiner had a 14-0 lead.

The Shiner defense again stiffened with Ryan Spann, Shawn Flores and Quentin Wright stopping the Bobcats, forcing a punt ending the first half with Shiner in possession.

Josh Smith set up Shiner in good field possession returning the second half kickoff to the Medina 45.

Murphy ran for a first down and Pustka and Chris Baer gained another to the Bobcat 20. Pustka then connected with Murphy for the touchdown. A penalty sent the Comanches back to their 18-yard line for the PAT but Murphy split the uprights to up Shiner's lead to 21-0.

The Comanches would score three more times in the third period. The first came on a 4-play, 41-yard drive with Franklin carrying all four times and scoring from the 11.

Shiner recovered a fumble on the Medina 24 with 5:20 left in the period to set up another score.

After handing off to Franklin, Pustka threw a block downfield clearing the way for his running back to the 1-yard line. Pustka then bulled in for the score. Murphy's kick was good and Shiner extended it's lead to 34-0.

Shiner again got possession with 4:05 left in the period on the Bobcat 49-yard line.

An offside penalty against Medina on fourth down kept the Comanche drive alive on the Bobcat 35. Pustka ran to the l2 and a personal foul added yardage to the 6-yard line.

Chris Baer then drove in for the score. Another penalty on the failed PAT attempt gave Shiner another try. Pustka made good with a 1 1/2-yard run to up the score to 42-0.

Ryan Spann's fumble recovery stopped Medina on the 35-yard line as the quarter ended.

After three quarters of engineering the Comanche offense, Pustka got a break and Quentin Wright took over for the rest of the game.

Medina avoided the shut out when J.P. Fuentes blocked a Shiner punt on about the Comanche 15-yard line. Matt McWilliams finally recovered the loose pigskin in the end zone for the touchdown. The PAT was no good.

The Bobcats got another offensive chance when Rusty Bruinsma intercepted a Wright pass on his 45-yard line but Shiner's defense held on fourth down as the clock ran out.

Pustka was the leading rusher with 84 yards on 12 carries. Murphy and Franklin had eight carries each for 73 and 72 yards, respectively. Pustka had two pass completions for touchdowns of 75 yards and 20 yards.

Chance Haby had 42 yards for Medina, while John Thornton finished with 32. Quarterback Kasey Crowther completed 2-of-l4 passes for only seven yards.

Agua Dulce (5-4) is a ball contol team. "They run a split defense and try to cause mistakes," noted Coach Turek. "We'll just have to play good ball and not make those mistakes," he said.

Friday's area playoff game against Agua Dulce will begin at 7 p.m. in Victoria.
