The Shiner Comanches continued their string of wins last Friday with a 44-0 blasting of the Benavides Eagles in the Class 1A bi-district contest played in George West.

The No. 1 ranked Comanches (11-0) clipped the Eagles' wings and never allowed them to get off the ground. Benavides had only 4 yards of total offense, minus 4 yards rushing and 8 passing.

"We had a good game all around," said Coach Steve Cerny. "We took control early and just outmatched them," he said.

The win sets up Shiner against Charlotte in the area round of playoffs this Friday at East Central High School in San Antonio.

Cerny said that the game won't be as easy as some folks think, "Charlotte has most of their players back from last year and they are a good ball club. They played Bracketville (10-0) earlier this year and gave them a good game."

Shiner RB Isaac Casares scored Shiner's final touchdown on a 5-yard run.

Chris Baer and Dustin Mayberry each scored two touchdowns for Shiner. Baer led the game with 142 yards on 12 carries and Mayberry picked up 131 on nine carries.

Ryan Kloesel returned an interception for a touchdown and Isaac Casares had Shiner's final touchdown in the fourth period. Scott Shimek, who booted four PATS, also had a 37-yard field goal.

Baer got the Comanches on the board on the third play of the game with a 53- yard touchdown scamper.

Baer scored his second touchdown on the first play of the second period on an 8-yard run. Shimek's PAT made it a 14-0 game.

Ryan Kloesel tacked on six points with a 20-yard pass interception return just seconds later and Shimek's kick extended the lead to 21-0. Still in the second period, Dustin Mayberry capped a 61-yard drive with an 11-yard run to put the game out of reach of the Eagles.

Shiner led 28-0 at half time. The Comanches forced four punts and had one interception in the first half.

Nothing much changed in the second half. The Eagles started off with minus yardage and had to punt. Shiner drove 39 yards to set up Shimek's field goal.

A pass interference call on Shiner gave the Eagles a boost on their next possession but not for long as the Eagles turned the ball over on downs at their 49.

Then with 3:30 left in the third period, Mayberry rambled into the end zone, giving Shiner a 37-0 lead.

An interception by Kevin Berger late in the third period set up Shiner at the Eagle 1-yard line but only for a brief moment as the Eagles recovered a fumble on the next play.

Another four-and-out possession gave the Comanches the ball on the Eagle 41.

Mayberry's 33-yard run put the ball inside the 10-yard line and two plays later Casares scored on a 5-yard run.

Kloesel thwarted the Eagles final attempt with an interception deep in Eagle territory as time ran out.

Joining Shiner's offensive effort were Dexter Mayberry with two carries for six yards and Kyle Condel three carries for nine yards.

Quarterback Trey Curtis carried six times for only three yards and was 0-4 in the passing department.

Shiner finished the game with 14 first downs and 296 total yards.

David Gonzales led Benavides with 19 yards on 12 carries. Geoffrey Bennett had the Eagles' only pass reception for eight yards.

If Shiner beats Charlotte, their next opponent will be the winner of the Chilton-Harper game.
