The Shiner defense came well prepared for the District 30-1A showdown between the Comanches and the Falls City Beavers.

Beaver quarterback, B.J. Sixto, who leads the area in the passing department with 101 completions was sacked 11 times and had to contend with one or more Comanches in his backfield most of the night.

The defense paved the way for the Comanches to take a 38-20 win and take over sole possession of first place in the district. Shiner is now 8-1 overall and 4-0 in district, while Falls City drops to 7-2,3-1.

The Comanches clinched a play-off berth and can take the district title with a win over Flatonia this coming Friday.

The Shiner defense never let up. Even after building a 20-7 half time lead, the defensive line and charging linebackers kept the pressure on the junior quarterback.

"We didn't give them the big pass plays," said defensive coordinator Reggie Morgan. "Our job was to contain him in the pocket and put the pressure on him. We did that pretty well."

Head coach Steven Cerny gave Morgan and the defense a lot of credit for executing the defensive game plan.

Cerny also had praise for the offensive line which opened up Shiner's running game against "some pretty big boys out there."

"It was a good team effort. It's hard to single out any one player --- everybody contributed, attacking all parts of the field. The players were excited, they played with enthusiasm and had fun."

Shiner jumped out to a 7-0 lead on their first possession, taking only three plays to score. Chris Baer, who scored three touchdowns in the game, capped the 45-yard drive with a 15-yard touchdown run. R.J. Lester's kick was good.

After taking the kickoff, the Beavers were stopped on downs but recovered a Comanche fumble on the Shiner 43 on the punt return. The Beavers converted on two fourth down plays and tied the game on Sixto's 28-yard run and Jim Ed Baugh's PAT.

Shiner took the lead for good in the second period, scoring twice to go up 20-7.

The Comanches used just over three minutes to score their first touchdown with Baer capping the 78-yard drive with a 29-yard run. Quarterback Garet Pustka had a key 20-yard run in the drive.

The Beavers were backed up to their 5-yard line after they were flagged twice following the kickoff. The Shiner defense made a goal line stand, in reverse, and forced a punt from the Beaver end zone. The Beavers were flagged again for interference on the fair catch and Shiner set up on the 29.

Pustka then broke loose for a 29-yard scoring run but a holding penalty negated the score. Four plays later Pustka broke several tackles and fought his way to the end zone. Lester's kick was good for a 20-7 lead with 1:30 left in the half.

Falls City tried to cut the lead before time ran out but sacks by Robbie Pavelka, Josh Burchell and others and a holding penalty shut down the effort as the half ended.

Falls City took the second half kickoff and took to the air. A pass to Derek Sturm advanced the Beavers into Comanche territory. Sixto then broke loose for 14 yards before being stopped by Ryan Spann. After an incomplete pass, Wright broke up two pass plays setting up a fourth-and-10 on the Shiner 35. The Beavers gambled and lost as Pavelka broke through and sacked Sixto on the 45-yard line.

After a penalty step off against Falls City, Eric Murphy split the line and raced 50 yards to the end zone and Shiner led 26-7 with 9:40 left in the third period.

Jared Boedeker made a good tackle on the kickoff return at the Falls City 20. The Beavers faced a brick wall as Baer sacked Sixto for a 5-yard loss and then broke up a pass.

On third-and-15, Sixto again dropped back and was met by Burchell on the five as he tried to get rid of the ball. Baer picked off the errant throw and raced in for the score. The kick failed but Shiner was on top, 32-7, with 8:19 still to go in the third period.

A sack by Pavelka and pass interception by Lester put another stop to the Falls City offense. A fumble recovery put them back on track on the Comanche 40 only to be stopped on the Comanche 25 by Pavelka and Spann who sacked Sixto on fourth down.

Falls City's next drive was again stopped deep in Comanche territory. The Beavers drove to the 11 where another Burchell sack and two incomplete passes had Falls City facing fourth-and-18 on the 19. Sixto's pass then fell incomplete in the end zone and Shiner took over as the third quarter ended.

The Comanches drove 81 yards for their final score, a third-and-goal pass to Quentin Wright in the end zone.

Down but not out, the Beavers fought back on two drives with Sixto scoring from eight yards out with 6:17 left and then adding a 6-yard touchdown run at the closing buzzer to make the final, 38-20.

Despite the many sacks and constant pressure, Sixto led the Beavers with 145 yards on 23 carries and 20 completions for 224 yards.

Baer led Shiner with 137 yards on 12 carries. Pustka carried nine times for 51 yards and Eric Murphy gained 75 on nine carries. Evans and Wright added the rest.

Shiner is scheduled to play Flatonia, a 47-6 winner over Runge last Friday.

"Flatonia will be another tough game. Their defense hasn't given up too many points either. And they have an explosive offense, so we'll have to play at our best," said Cerny.

Game time in Flatonia is 7:30 p.m.
