CHARLOTTE -- The Shiner Comanches moved to 5-2 overall and 3-0 in District 30-1A with a 30-14 win over the Charlotte Trojans in Charlotte last Friday.

Bryan Franklin added two more touchdowns to his yearly total and gave gave the Comanches a l4-0 first quarter lead against the Trojans.

Franklin scored on a 22-yard run with 7:51 left in the first period and added a touchdown from one yard out with 4:49 left in the quarter to give Shiner the lead.

The 2-point conversion pass from Garet Pustka to Steven Evans was good following the first score.

The first drive was set up by a fumble rccovery by Josh Smith at the Charlotte 33-yard line. Shiner's second score cam on a 3-play, 52-yard drive. The drive included runs of 35 and 17 yards by Franklin and Pustka, respectively.

Charlotte got a break late in the first period when Juan Sanchez recovered a Comanche fumble on the Shiner 35-yard line.

The Trojans cut the lead to 14-8 with l:50 left in the first period on a 5-yard John Gaitan to Juan Sanchez pass followed by the 2-point conversion from Tommy Garcia to Adam Garcia.

Following an exchange of punts, Shiner got the ball in good field position on the Charlotte 38. The Comanches failed to score from inside the 1-yard line and the Trojans took over on their 5.

Two plays later1 Franklin intercepted a pass to setup Shiner's third score. The drive was capped by Pustka's 2-yard touchdown run and 2-point conversion run to give shiner a 22-8 halftime lead.

Charlotte opened the second half with a 64-yard scoring pass from Alfred Salazar to Tommy Garcia to put the Trojans back into the game, 22-14.

The Comanches fumbled the ball on their next possession and Matt Ramos recovered for the Trojans on the Charlotte 46-yard line.

The Comanche defense forced a fourth down pass which was intercepted by Quentin Wright on his own 20-yard line midway through the third period. Wright returned the interception for a Comanche touchdown.

Pustka hit Eric Murphy in the end zone for the 2-point conversion and Shiner had a little breathing room at 30-14.

The Trojans battled back and drove to the Shiner 4-yard line before being stopped when Shawn Flores batted down a fourth down pass.

Neither team could sustain an offensive drive in the final period and Shiner held on to a 30-14 win.

"We played hard and didn't have many turnovers," said Coach Billy Turek. "We moved the ball well with Franklin running hard and Pustka doing a good job at quarterback.

"Rudy Moreno, Ryan Spann and Shawn Flores blocked well for us on offense," noted Turek.

Defensively, Adam Dawson, Steven Evans, Adron Price and Robbie Pavelka had a good game and except for two pass plays, the secondary played well.

Pustka was the leading ground gainer with 121 yards on 23 attempts. Franklin had 14 carries for 76 yards and Chris Baer carried 13 times for 53 yards.

Pustka threw only once for eight yards and connected on two 2-point conversions.

Charlotte had only 31 yards rushing but had 148 passing yards. Adam Garcia was on the receiving end of five passes for 134 yards.

Shiner lost 2-of-2 fumbles and incurred 65 yards in penalties.

Shiner will host Falls City Friday night at Comanche Stadium. "If we beat them, we will be in good shape for the district title," said Turek.

Shiner's final game will be against Sabinal next week, but this week's game is an important one for the Comanches.

This Friday is also Parents Night and will include pre-game introductions and recognitions.
