SHINER -- The Shiner offense, which has been sputtering the last three weeks, finally got a full charge Friday with a 58-7 District 30-A homecoming win over the Runge Yellowjackets.

The offensive unit as well as the defense put together a decisive win over the Yellowjackets. The Comanches amassed 417 total yards while holding the Yellowjackets to just 77 on the ground and -5 in the air. Except for a 70-yard TD run by Chris King in the first period, the Yellowjackets were shut down and netted only seven yards on the ground.
Chris Baer (10) leads the way for Bryan Franklin (9) on this play against Runge Friday night. Baer threw a good block on Wesley Ariguillin (35) to spring Franklin around the corner.

Bryan Franklin was Shiner's big gun, scoring five touchdowns and rushing for 136 yards on 10 carries. Franklin opened the scoring with a 10-yard run with 8:20 left in the first quarter and ended the quarter with three more TDs.

Garet Pustka was back at the quarterback position after missing several games due to injury. Pustka scored one touchdown on the ground and threw for two more.

"It was an easy win but a good win for us after having our problems the last couple of weeks," said Coach Billy Turek. "Garet Pustka was back at quarterback and that made a big difference offensively. He ran good and threw two touchdown passes. Bryan Franklin did an outstandinging job with his running, taking advantage of good blocking by Shawn Flores, Eric Murphy and Adam Dawson as well as others on the line," added Turek.
Ryan Spann (58), Shawn Flores (66) and Adron Price team up to bring down Runge's John Vasquez after a short gain in Friday's win against the Yellowjackets.

Defensively, the Comanches made one mistake, letting King loose on his touchdown run. After that Shiner shut down Runge's offense. "Kelsey Pohler made some good defensive plays in the secondary and Ryan Spann, Adam Dawson and Shawn Flores led the effort on the line," said Turek. Flores had two blocked punts, which resulted in two touchdowns by Franklin.

The Yellowjackets answered Franklin's' first touchdown with a quick 70-yard scoring run by King to knot the score at 7-7. But this would be the only bright moment in the game for Runge as the Comanche defense put a stop to all Yellowjacket offensive attempts.

Shiner took the lead for good with 5:49 to play in the first quarter when Pustka scored from eight yards out on a 4th down play. Kelsey Pohler set up Shiner's next drive with an interception on his 20- yard line and returning it to the 34.
Chris Baer (10) fights for yardage as an unidentified Yellowjacket, at left, and Jorge Medina (67) come in for the stop.

After a short delay to attend to an injured Runge player, play resumed with Chris Baer taking the ball to the 46. Franklin got the call on the next play and won the foot race for his second TD to make it 20-7.

Franklin's interception on Runge's next possession set up another scoring drive on the Comanche 42. A quick pass over the middle from Pustka to Eric Murphy added another score to make the count 26-0.

A tough defensive stance by the Comanches and a penalty resulted in the fifth Shiner touchdown of the quarter. Shawn Flores blocked the punt in the end zone and Franklin was there to catch the pigskin for six points.

Jeremy Parr recovered a Runge fumble with 1:13 left in the period. Three plays later Franklin scooted in from the 13-yard line and the Comanches were way ahead, 38-7.

Flores, Parr and Adron Price made good defensive plays to force a Runge punt on the first possession of the second quarter and the Comanches took over on the Runge 49. Two plays later Pustka hit Devin Carroll with a 47-yard scoring pass. Adam Dawson tacked on the PAT for a 47-7 Shiner lead.
Miss DeAdra Wright was crowned Shiner High Homecoming Queen for 2001 during homecoming festivities last Friday night, escorted by Devin Carroll.

Jason Caka, Dawson, Flores and Ryan Spann stopped Runge's next offensive attempt and once again Flores blocked a Runge punt and Franklin was there to snag the ball and return it 13 yards for his fifth touchdown of the game. Dawson split the uprights for the PAT and Shiner held a 52-7 lead at intermission.

Shiner's defense continued the pressure in the second half and stopped Runge from ever gaining any momentum. Chris Baer finished the scoring for the night with a 2-yard run in the third period, making the final 58-7.

Halftime activities included the crowning of DeAdra Wright as homecoming queen.
