Quentin Wright got things rolling in the 48-0 win over Nixon Smiley with a 24-yard touchdown run just 1:30 into the game. Wright would score two more times in the game.
Joining Wright in the scoring column were Chris Baer, also with three touchdowns, and Garet Pustka with one.
The Mustangs ran 42 plays to Shiner’s 39 but the Shiner defense held all their drives to only 138 yards rushing and 10 yards passing.
The Comanches, meanwhile, rushed for 389 yards and added another 49 on one pass play.
Pustka added Shiner’s second touchdown on a 36-yard run to begin the second quarter. The score capped a 10-play 71-yard drive and with Scott Shimek’s second PAT kick gave the Comanches a 14-0 lead.
Good defensive efforts by the Comanches again held the Mustangs and forced a punt.
Shiner took over on their 20-yard line and drove downfield in seven plays with Baer scoring on a 1-yard run. The drive included Shiner’s only pass play, a 49-yard strike from Pustka to Casey Coleman.
Following the halftime ceremony, which saw Hailey Michalec crowned as homecoming queen, the Comanches scored on their first possession with Wright breaking through for a 68-yard touchdown run.
Sophomore Ryan Kloesel added his first of three PAT kicks.
A fumble recovery on the Mustang 34 set up another scoring drive, capped by a 10-yard run by Baer. Kloesel’s kick made it 35-0.
Two minutes later, Baer scooped up a loose ball on the Mustang 31 and raced into the end zone for his third touchdown of the night.
Then with 1:28 left in the third quarter, Wright added his third touchdown and completed the scoring on a 62-yard punt return. Kloesel added the PAT and Shiner was up 48-0.
The Mustangs made one last effort to get into the end zone, driving deep into Comanche territory in the final period. Kenzley Wright, however, preserved Shiner’s shut out with a fumble recovery on the 2-yard line.
Ceasar Velasquez led the Mustangs with 90 yards on 19 carries.
The Mustangs remain winless, while Shiner ups their record to 5-0 as they start district play this Friday in Charlotte.GAME STATISTICS N-S Shiner First Downs 10 18 Yards Rushing 39-138 38-389 Yards Passing 10 43 Passes 3-3-0 1-3-0 Punts 5-39.6 1-22 Fumbles-lost 4-1 1-0 Penalties-yards 4-40 4-20 Nixon-Smiley 0 0 0 0 -- 0 Shiner 7 14 27 0 -- 48 SCORING DETAILS First Quarter S - Quentin Wright 24 run (Scott Shimek kick), 10:32 Second Quarter S - Garet Pustka 36 run (Shimek kick), 11:13 S - Chris Baer 1 run (Shimek kick), 1:25 Third Quarter S - Wright 68 run (Ryan Kloesel kick), 9:23 S - Baer 10 run (Kloesel kick), 5:32 S - Baer 69 fumble return (kick failed), 3:38 S - Wright 62 punt return (Kloesel kick), 1:18 Fourth Quarter no score
