MARION -- After being on the top ten state Class A list since the beginning of the season, the Shiner Comanches find themselves playing at .500 with a 2-2 record following a 32-8 loss to the Marion Bulldogs last Friday.

Plagued by offensive mistakes and some injuries, the Comanches will try to regroup this week against Kenedy in their last pre-district game this season.

Shiner opens District 30-1A play next week with homecoming against Runge.

The Comanches had six turnovers against Marion, five on fumbles and one interception.

The Bulldogs turned two of those mistakes into scores within a minute of play in the second period. Jonathan Dehoyas returned a recovered fumble 23 yards for a touchdown and Darryl Cunningham followed with an 18-yard interception for another score.

"We are making too many mistakes. Injuries have hurt us some but healthy or not we won't win games as long as we make these kinds of mistakes," said Coach Billy Turek.

"Until we correct that we can't do too much offensively."

"Marion has a good ball club and played well and you can't win against that with a lot of mistakes," he added.

Defensively, Turek cited Jeremy Parr, Adron Price and Chris Baer for good effort.

Marion opened the scoring in the first quarter on a 29-yard pass from Justin Mueller to A.J. Ashworth.

Jesse Loyola scored on a 72-yard run in the second period and Marion was ahead 13-0. The two scores on turnovers late in the second period gave the Bulldogs a 26-0 lead at intermission.

Alonzo Aguero added Marion's final points on a 35-yard run in the third quarter.

Shiner finally got on the board with 6:02 left in the third period on a 9-yard Quentin Wright to Bryan Franklin pass with Franklin adding the 2- point conversion run.

Marion had 262 yards of total offense, while the Bulldog defense held Shiner to just 107 yards.

Eric Murphy led the Comanches with 42 yards rushing on 15 carries. Shiner was 1-for-4 and one interception in the passing department.

Game time for Friday's contest in Kenedy is 7:30 p.m.
