Dalton Handley, defensive standout for the Shiner Comanches, has signed a letter of intent to play football at University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton.
During Dalton's football career at Shiner High, he has played several positions including middle linebacker (2005), defensive end (2006 and 2007) and defensive end and offensive tackle (2008).
The 4-year letterman received All-District first team defensive honors in 2006 and 2007. He also received All-Area honorable mention on defense. His 2008 honors included: Texas Sports Writers Association All-State third team defensive lineman; All-State honorable-mention, defensive end; All-Area 2nd team defensive end; All-District MVP as defensive end and All-District first team offense as tackle.
The UMHB Crusaders ("The Cru") are a member of the American Southwest Conference. Other teams in the conference include: Texas Lutheran, Hardin Simmons, Sul Ross State, Howard Payne, McMurray, East Texas Baptist, Louisiana College and Mississippi College. Head coach of the Crusaders is Pete Fredenburg.
"Coach Fred" started the football program in 1998 and in eleven seasons has compiled a 99-29 record. The Cru were ASC champions in 2008, '07, '06, '05 and ASC Tri-Champions in 2003 after winning their first ASC championship in 2002. UMHB has also earned seven trips to the NCAA Division III playoffs. The Cru finished their 2008 season ranked third in the nation.
