The Shiner Comanches used the power running of running back Chris Baer and quarterback Garet Pustka to claim a 34-0 win over the Poth Pirates at Comanche Stadium last Friday.

A solid, powerful offensive line cleared the way for Baer and Pustka on touchdown runs of 62,13,29 and 13 yards. Quentin Wright added a 2-yard touchdown for the final score.

Baer's 62-yard touchdown came on the third play of the game as he took a pitch from Pustka who then threw a block to clear the way to the right. Once past the line of scrimmage, Baer outran the secondary for the score. The PAT kick was blocked but Shiner was on the board with 10:34 left in the first period.

Clayton McCorkle raises the ball following a fumble recovery in the 34-0 win over Poth. Assisting on the play were Scott Shimek (44) and Jared Boedeker (55). At left is Ryan Kloesel (28).

After an exchange of punts Poth started a drive on their 28 but the Comanches quickly stopped the Pirate offensive on the Shiner 35 as Quentin Wright recovered a fumble. The Comanches failed to convert on downs and punted to the Pirate 15.

Brady Strauss and Clayton McCorkle sacked the quarterback on the 7 yard line forcing a punt from the end zone. Shiner took over on the 35. Baer carried to the 29 and Pustka finished the short drive with a 29-yard run off right tackle for the score. The try for two failed but Shiner held a 12-0 lead with 9:48 left in the first half.

A swarming defense on Poth's next drive shut down the Pirates in short order. Nick Evans, Trey Curtis and Strauss smothered Poth's running back Bobby Joe Serna for a short gain. Baer stopped Serna on second down and Steven Evans sacked the quarterback on third down.

After the punt, Shiner took over on the Poth 42. Quentin Wright carried for four yards, Pustka kept for another 25 and on the next play broke up the middle for a 13-yard touchdown. Baer added the 2-point conversion and Shiner led 20-0 with 6:52 left in the half.

It's almost a face mask violation, but quarterback Garet Pustka swings past the would-be tackler and makes good yardage.

Scott Shimek's kick off sailed into the end zone and Poth took over at the 20. On third down, Steven Evans hit quarterback Braden Boening causing a fumble. Casey Coleman landed on the loose ball setting up Baer's 13-yard touchdown run to end the scoring in the first half. Shimek kicked the PAT and Shiner took a 27-0 lead into the locker room.

Neither team moved the ball into scoring position until late in the third period when Shiner started a 76-yard march, climaxed with a 2-yard touchdown run by Quentin Wright with 2:27 into the final period. Shimek's kick was good and Shiner held a 34-0 shut out.

The rest of the game saw some new faces on the field as Trey Curtis replaced Pustka and Kenzley Wright and Ryan Kloesel relieved the starting backfield.

The defense also had some personnel changes but there was no change in intensity of the Comanche defense. Wright, Nick Evans, Kloesel and others were in the thick of things and preserved the shut out, recovering a fumble on the last play.

"Poth has a lot of young players, and our experience dominated the game," said Shiner coach Steve Cerny.

Quentin Wright looks to see which way Jeff Waclawczyk (50) is going to go before side-stepping the tackle.
"Our defensive line and linebackers really played good and the offensive line, from tackle-to-tackle, did a great job," he said.

Shiner used a balanced and versatile offensive attack with three running backs. Cerny used a mix of the veer, power up the middle and an occasional pass to stymie the defense.

The Comanches rushed for 312 yards with Baer picking up 103, Pustka 108 and Quentin Wright 74. Pustka completed two passes for 13 yards.

This Friday, the Comanche play host to 2A Schulenburg.

"They have a good running back in Dontae Turner and their quarterback is pretty quick and he throws well. They have a lot of speed so we'll have to be up for this game," added Cerny.

Game time at Comanche Stadium is 7:30 p.m.
