The Shiner Comanche winning strategy hasn't changed much as they demonstrated in their 24-6 win over the Poth Pirates last Friday in Poth.

The Comanches ran 44 rushing plays as opposed to only five passing attempts.

"The win was a good start and yes we are sticking to Shiner tradition as a running/rushing team," said Coach Steven Cerny. "But we are ready to take advantage of every opportunity when needed with our passing."

Cerny said the offensive line did a good job but "we aren't where we need to be going into district."

The Comanches fumbled nine times, losing six, in the win over Poth. That also is a concern for the coaching staff and will continue to be addressed.

"The kids have a good work ethic, so we know we'll keep improving," added Cerny.

The Comanches amassed a total of 302 yards against Poth. Chris Baer picked up 109 yards on 17 carries, Kenzley Wright 105 on 12 carries, and quarterback Trey Curtis 65 on 14 carries.

Curtis completed two passes for 23 yards, including a 15-yard completion to Kevin Berger for Shiner's first touchdown late in the first period. The PAT failed on a bad snap but the Comanches were on the board.

Curtis' other completion was for eight yards to Chase O'Connor.

Early in the second period, Chris Baer scored on a 3-yard run and tacked on the 2-point conversion for a 14-0 lead.

With 3:48 left in the first half, Scott Shimek booted a 26-yard field goal to up the margin to 17-0.

Poth finally got on the board just before the half with a 11-yard scoring pass from Braden Boening to Jerry Alfaro.

Baer added his second touchdown on a 10-yard run with 1:50 left in the third quarter. Shimek was good on the PAT and the Comanches came away with a 24-6 win.

The Pirates had 106 rushing yards with Bobby Joe Serna picking up 71 yards on 13 carries. Willie Fluitt had 27 and Boening added eight.

Boening was 3-15 in the passing department for 21 yards and one interception.

This Friday, the Comanches will travel to East Bernard for a 7:30 non-district contest.
